Requirements For
Parking Changed

The Medford Planning com
mission Thursday nifjht pass
ed an amendment to the park
lnc rcnuirements in limited
commercial districts in Med-
lord.
Previously, the requirement
had been four square feet of
parking space for every one
square foot of gross building
area. The amendment changes
the ratio to three to one.
The amendment as passed
reads: "No building for busi
ness, professional, public or
ouasi public use shall here
after be erected, enlarged, or
moved, upon premises within
a limited commercial district,
and the actual use of the
building shall not be changed
to the use classified as iua
limited commercial, unless ve
hicle park ing area of not
hide parking area of not
each square fool uf gross
building area is provided and
thereafter maintained

Mark Goldy, representing
the Medford Shopping Center,
told the group he had "no par
ticular comment to make"
about the change, but that he
had been wailing to get the
matter settled so the future
development of the shopping
ccnler could be determined.

reading in the area of plan
ning indicated to him that the
generally recommended ratio
was 4 to 1, or if adequate pro
visions for future develop
ments were made, the ratio
might better be 5 to 1.
The commission vote on the
amendment was unanimous.

aubject to certain stipulations
Imposed by the commission.

were present at Ihe meeting,
which was presided over by
Commission President Charl
es Crary.

Medford Boy To Benefit
From Bloodmobile Visit
Among valley residents
who will benefit from blood
received during the Tuesday
and Wednesday visit of the
Red Cross Bloodmobile here
will be Mclvin Smith, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith,
417 Pearl St., Medford.
Mclvin, who will celebrate
his 13th birthday at Doern
becher Memorial Hospital for
Children in Portland Oct. 24,
was seriously burned at his
home last May.
Since that time he lias used
12 pints of blood, and skin
grafts will require 30 more
pints. It was reported that
the skin grafts must wait until
there is sufficient blood on
hand for the operation.
Student At Hedrick
Mclvin was a student at
Hedrick Junior High school
prior to the accident which
happened while he was burn
ing leaves at his home. His
parents are in Portland with
him. His father is employed
by McGrew Brothers Sawmill.
California Man
Seeks Mother Here
A San Luis Obispo, Calif.,
man has written to the Med
ford city police to ask assis
tance in finding his mother,
whom he believes may still
be alive and living in the
Medford area.
Robert J. Edwards, of 276
Del Mar dr., wrote police he
has not seen his mother since
he was six months old.
Her maiden name was Edna
Landcnberg, and she married
a man named Ired Upton,
who died during World War
II, Edwards said.
The last Edwards heard, his
mother was living on cither
Edwards or Austin sts. in Med
ford.
He would be grateful for
any information about his
mother's whereabouts. Per
sons with information should
contact the Medford cily po
lice department, or communi
cate directly with Edwards.
The boy was moved to the
Portland hospital in August
after spending the summer at
Sacred Heart hospital.
The quota for the Bloodmo
bile visit here this week is
350 pints for which 400 don
ors arc needed, Red Cross of
ficials said. Persons may do
nate blood in the name of
any person they wish, or for
organization's blood banks. -
Hours for the Bloodmobile
visit will be Tuesday from 2
to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To avoid
waiting at the chapter house,

At the present the Rogue
valley area is in arrears on
blood donations. A total of
1,185 pints must be donated
in the area prior to1 Jan. 1,
Red Cross officials stressed.

Newbry Attends
Committee Meeting
State Sen. L. W. Newbry of
Jackson county was in Port
land Thursday attending the
interim committee meeting on
small business.
The committee was holding
hearings on a bill suggested
by Gov. Mark Hatfield for
creation of a state labor-management
relations committee.
The measure is based on the
unanimous recommenda t i o n
of the governor's committee
on labor-management rela
tions. The recommendation
calls for a 10-mcmbcr com
mittee of five labor and five
management representatives
appointed by the governor.
The proposed committee
would have mediation, fact
finding and research and edu
cation duties. It would oper
ate in the field of emergency
labor disputes on a voluntary
basis where other procedures
failed.
Other matters scheduled for
consideration were final deci
sions on proposed legislation
regulating retail installment
financing and a bill which
would prohibit debt-consolidating
agencies in Oregon.
TANK BLAZES - Firemen pour water on a storage lank at
the Acme Paint Co. in Detroit, Mich. The lank containing
paint thinner exploded causing the fire, which was fought
by 17 companies. No one was injured. (UPI)
Turkey Killings Investigated By Officer in Month
Investigations following the
killing of 280 turkeys in Ap
plegate and Eagle Point areas
highlighted dog control activi

Stray dogs slaughtered 189
turkeys at Snidcr's turkey
ranch on the Applcgate ani.
42 turkeys at John Oster
hout's ranch in the White City
area. Later, coyotes killed 49
more turkeys at Snider s
ranch.
Hagler said the 189 turkeys
were not eaten; they were
bitten in the back. Coyotes
usually snap off the turkey's
head and seldom kill more
than they can eat. A mother
coyote may have been teach
ing her pups to kill in this
case, Hagler guessed.
Destroys Dog
He destroyed a dog he pick
ed up in the White City area
which was believed to be one
of the stray dogs killing tur-

Three Accidents Are
Checked By Police
Medford cily police investi
gated three non-injury vehicle
accidents Thursday. No cita
tions were issued, police said.
A cow owned by Earle Ev
erett Fichtner, 2547 Corona
ave., was killed about 7:40
p.m. when it was struck by a
car operated by Janetle Au
gusta Witt, 50, of 44 North
Orange si. The mishap occur
red on Crater Lake highway.
George Washington Sim
mons, 606 Valley View dr.,
told city police that his car
was damaged by an unknown
vehicle about 12:30 p.m. while
it was parked at 25 South Riv
erside ave.
Roy Eldon Baker, 53, re
ported to police that his pick
up truck knocked over a city
parking meter while he was
attempting to park his vehicle
about 3:25 p.m. on Front st.
between Fifth and Sixth sis.
Baker was not cited.

Friday a dog was turned
over to the dog control otficer
by the dog's owner after it
killed a goat in the Berrydale
district.
During September, Hagler
received 411 cases involving
dogs and 85 dogs were picked
up. Seventy-three were taken
to the dog pound. New homes
were found for 32. ana 24
were picked up by their own
ers. Eighty-seven lost dogs
were reported, and 106 dogs
destroyed.
A total of 213 cats were
handled by the department,
94 picked up, six found rew
homes and 204 cats were destroyed.
