Rufui G. - She wants lo go
off without me again this
year.
Berths G. - I dot much
more out of a trip when he
slays home.
Rufui G. - Around harvest
time each year, Bertha and
I take the 400-mile drive into
the hills lo visit her parents.
It happened that last year I
couldn't get away because of
a business convention in Chi
cago, so Bertha made the trip
with a lady neighbor who
took turns with her at the
wheel.
This year I was clearing my
calendar for the annual Jour
ney when my wife informed
me she'd rather go alone and
not to bother. She'd get Cous
in Tess lo help with the driv
ing! Well, aside from being
fired as chauffeur and escort,
other angles bother me. Num
ber one, I'd like to sec her
folks, too. Number Iwo, those
two women on the loose alone
will try anything, probably
get lost, sick, injured or rob'
bed. Bertha does things on
Impulse and I'll worry about
her.
.
Berths G. - I'm not firing
Rufus as my chief escort, He's
still Number One In my life
of course. But last fall I dis
covered how much fun could
be had, both going and re
turning, along the route to my
parents' farm. And it's not the
sort of thing Rufus enjoys. To
him, a motor trip is merely a
mailer of making mileage
fast. In the 18 years we've
been keeping this rendezvous
with my family, his main
concern has been trying lo
find short cuts and cutting a
few minutes off last year's
time. He'd never let me stop
to linger at a church fair or
a small-town football game.
But last year my friend and
I stretched out the return trip
fur three days. Wo took in a
rodeo, a prize pumpkin con
test and other excitements.
Hutus would have whizzed
me past them. This year I
plan to slop lor blrd-walchiug

inc about the Americans. They
do anything to save a few
minutes. But what do they do
then, witli all the time they
save?
That's good question for
Rufus. Okay he knocks a
half-hour off the driving time
required to get home. Docs
that mean he has a half-hour
more for fun, for enrichment?
Probably not. He may spend
the time saved In grousing

Time
As in most marilHl debates,
we counsel compromise. How
about a direct trip lo, and a
zigzaggy one fro? The y.lgs
and zags, of course, arc lo be
charted by Bcrlha, as her re
ward for having conceded the
straight-shoot for Rufus, one
way. She'd be having a short
er trip, but she'd be having
Rufus along, a chastened Ru
fus who'd be having a longer
trip on which he indulges
Bertha's yen to linger, loiter
and look around.
Rufus will be invited along,
we'll wager, (and Cousin Tess
will have to bow out on this
journey, at least) as soon as
he concedes he's been sol fish
during the annunl drives,
speeding along as he pleased,
ignoring Bertha s interest in
the passing attractions. Each
arrow and sign has been mak
ing her heart leap, and now
she's determined to let her
heart dance and follow her
fancy. Even though Rufus ac
companies her as a sort of in
dulgent, disinterested chtuit-
four, he'll find some of her
joie cle vlvrc rubbing oft on
him. He'll
see the sense of
long wfy for a
sit by a singing
going the
chance to
bronk. '
While Bcrlha may feel a
bit more Inhibited wllh Rufus
along tliHn alone with Just
wlldcap Cousin Tess, she'll
not only get her blid-wfltchlng
done but she'll be planting in
Rufus the germs of her own
fever for following fascinnl-
Ing trails. If the germs "take."
her future trips may well in
clude country auctions, coun
try fairs and other delights.
Who knows but that she'll be I
the one to whiz Rufus past a
pic-eatlng contest.

School Census To
The school census will be
taken In all school districts in
Oregon during the last week
in October by school district
clerks or other persons desig
nated by the clerks, according
to Jackson County School
Superintendent Alf B. Mek
vold. The names and ages of all
persons in each district over
four years old and less than 20
years, plus the names and post
office addresses of all parents
and guardians in the district
will be recorded.
The stale law states: "No
parent or guardian of a child
of school age shall fail to an
swer truly all questions asked
them regarding the number,
age and sex of all children."
An accurate and complete
census is needed for appor
tionment of school funds such
as the state basic school fund
appropriated by the legisla
ture on the basis of total
school census, Mekvold said.
Allocation Per Child
Current allocation is $120
per census child. The county
school fund and the state com
mon school fund are appor
tioned on the actual census of
each school district, Mekvold
explained.
Census records also arc
used for verification of birth
date and age for social secur
ity, retirement benefits and in
securing birth certificates.
They are used by school dis
