APPOINTED - Mrs. Kalhryn
J. South has been appointed
assistant secretary of the
Jackson County Federal Sav
ings and Loan association.
The appointment was made at
the last board ol directors
meeting. Mrs. South started
with the firm in 1952, serv
ing in the bookkeeping and
teller departments. She is now
in charge of the savings de

Shows Belief in
Volume Increase

Slock Exchange may not have
.-cemed high recently, but
fome improvements in the
trading data information ser
vice announced by the ex
change reflect the firm belief
of exchange officials in in
creased daily volume as the
years pass.
The number of shares trad
ed on the exchange has been
averaging about 3.R million
per day in 1962. After the
tremendous volume of the last
of May and the first of June,
big trading days have been
scarce.
Yet, exchange spokesmen
have long felt that they must
gear for the rapid, accurate
reporting of trading informa
tion at a time when sharp
turnover of 6 and 7 million a
day will be commonplace.
They believe, despite the re
cent relative quietude of the
market, thai these days are
not too far distant. .
This is part of the thinking
which was behind the NYSE
announcement of a computer
system, prepared for the ex
change, which will automate
the distribution of trading in
formation by early 19H5.
Adequate Vocabulary
The system will run the
stock tickers: it will "speak,"
with a limited but adequate
vocabulary, to member sub
scribers to the NYSE quota
tion service. A high speed ac
ress switching system will tie
the computer center with the
direct private lines of the ser
vice. Previously. Exchange presi
dent Keith Funston had an
nounced plans to put into
service by early 1964 a new
tape printer capable of speeds
up to 900 or perhaps 1.0(10
characters a minute. At the
900 rate, this would be about
R0 per cent faster than the
present model: it would run
at a rate of about 150 words
a minute. The new computer
service, designed to speed the
recording of transactions right
from the floor, would be ef
fective about a year later.
