Try and Stop Me
By BENNETT CERF-
A LECTURER who underestimates his audience is not
worth listening to. I shall never forget a letter I re
ceived after I had spoken to a ladies club years ago in
Grand Rapids, Michigan.
"Thank you for obvious
ly putting your heart into
your appearance here," it
read, and continued, "I
wonder if you knew that
the dignified matron in
the front row who asked
you about the menace of
comic books was once the
shining star of the Folies
Bergere in Paris (with
out that mink coat, of
course)? The lady next
to her, -with the ermine
scarf, is an archaeologist
who has worked and
suffered in the most remote corners of the world. And be
hind them sat two maiden ladies who have contributed over
five million dollars anonymously to charities, and a lady
who almost broke the bank at Monte Carlo some years ago.
Could an audience at Carnegie Hall top an array like that?"
Bill Weldon drove his secretary Corinne to a tennis match one
blazing afternoon in Columbus. "X hope our seats aren't too far
front," said Corinne. "It's too cold there." The puzzled Mr.
Weldon asked, "Why do you think it's colder down front,
Corinne?" She explained, "I'm sure I don't know, but it cer
tainly was at the ice carnival in January i"

Presented Awards
Two additional employees
from the Medford district of
the bureau of land manage
ment were presented incen
tive awards recently for their
superior perforriiance of work
during the past rating period,
according to Donald J. Scho
ficld, district manager.
Mrs. Berte P. Thurston and
William E. McLaughlin, both
of Medford, received outstand
ing performance ratings and
were presented with certifi
cates of superior performance.
A cash award of $300 was
presented to McLaughlin,
while a cash grant had been
awarded to Mrs. Thurston two
weeks ago.
A total of six employees
have been given special recog
nition in the Medford district
within recent weeks.
The awards are a result of
recommendations by the dis
trict manager and the superr
visors of the employees to the
bureau of land management
incentive awards committee in
Portland.
The incentive award pro
gram is designed to promote
greater interest, efficiency,
and economy in government

Retirement Age People May Be Losing Benefits
-A 9
Individuals in this area who
are of retirement age and who
have not yet made application
for social security payments
may be losing benefits, accord
ing to Edward B. Jacobson,
district manager of the Med
ford social security office.
The loss of benefit payments
is often a result of misunder
standing of the social security
retirement test. Part of this
test provides that, regardless
of the total yearly earnings 'of
a beneficiary, he can still re
ceive his social security check
for any calendar month in
which he neither earns more
than $100 as an employee nor
works substantially in self
employment. A good example of those
who may be losing benefits is
the school teacher, Jacobson
said. Although the teacher
might be paid wages of more
than $100 each month of the
year, he normally earns these
wages only during the school
months and could therefore
receive benefits for the other
months.
Since payments can be
made for only 12 months pre
ceding the month in which an
application is filed, it is im

Surface Rights of Claims Under Study
Portland - IDPB - A case on
the surface rights of 90 min
ing claims on 1,800 acres
along the Little North Fork
of the Santiam River was
being studied today.
The Department of Interior
hearing ended Thursday aftt'r
two days. Hearing officer
Graydon Holt is expected to
take two to six months to
reach a decision.
A move by the U. S. Forest
Service to take over the sur
face rights of mining claims
in the Willamette National
Forest north of Elkhorn was
contested by the owners of 10
groups of claims.
The Forest Service asserted
a claim to the surface rights
under 1955 amendments to an
old federal mining law. The
owners contended the surface
rights belonged to them under
the old law, which granted
exclusive surface rights to
mining claim holders.
