Ice-Water
Idea Just
Sassafras
By MILTON RICHMAN
Los Angeles - UIPH - They
shake like a leaf - and that
goes for all of them.
Some perpetrators of purple
prose like to make readers
think that big league ball
players come especially equip
ped with ice-water coursing
through their veins but that's
strictly a lot of sassafras.
Guys like Ouke Snider, with
16 seasons in the majors, ad
mits it ... so does Don Larsen,
who once pitched a perfect
World Series game . . , and so
does Stan Williams, who held
the Giants hitlcss over the last
1 23 innings Tuesday to re
ceive credit for the Dodgers'
big victory.
'I can t remember when I
was more nervous in my life,"
confessed the 26-year-old En
field, N.H., right-hander, who
has been pitching profession
ally since 1054.
More Yeiterday
Williams, a strapping six
foot - four 220 - pounder, had
hurled three hitlcss innings in
relief against the Milwaukee
Braves in the final 11)59 play
off game lo wrap up that Dod
ger triumph and then added
another hitlcss stint in the
World Series against the Chi
cago White Sox that year.
"I was shaking more yester
day than I ever did in that
playoff ga-me against the
Braves or even in the World
Series with the White Sox," he
said.
Nor is any pitcher com
pletely devoid of tension, no
matter what he says.
Southpaw Johnny P o d r e s
concedes he's bound to feel the
pressure when he first goes
out there today, and Yankee
left-hander Whiley Ford, who
probably will start the open
ing game of the World Series,
says, "I'm still nervous at the
start even when 'I pilch
against the Washington Sena
tors. "

Hunter-Landowner Educational
Program Set in Grant County
Portland -Deer hunters
heading into the John Day
country of Grant county in
eastern Oregon arc being
greeted by a counly-wide edu
cational program aimed at im
proving hunter-landowner re
lations. Sponsored by four
Grant county organizations,
the program was launched
this month as a result of de
teriorating hunter-landowner
relations and the increasing
closure of lands to hunting.
Spearheading the program
is the Grant County Sports
man's association, Cattleman's
association, the John Day
Chamber of Commerce, and
the Grant county court. The
Oregon game commission, for
est service, state police and
many other groups and
agencies are cooperating in
the educational program.
The program as launched
this month has four phases of
operation. One is the erection
of 4x8-foot signs at all major
highway approaches to the
county. The signs welcome
hunters, but ask each to con
duct himself as though he
were a guest of the county,
respecting property, leaving
a clean camp, and being care
ful with the use of fire. These
cautions are printed In a large
symbolic telescope sight ring
which sponsors hope will be
come an informal trademark
of the program.
Placards
Distribution of large quan
tities of placards carrying the
same message is another
phase of the program. Many of
the placards are placed under
windshield wipers of hunter's
cars. Also a handy-sized bro
chure is being distributed at
service stations, cafes, and
other points, and at hunter
camps by roving patrols and
other volunteers.
A fourth point on which the
sponsors base much hope is an

Nebraska's Bob Devaney Selected Coach of Week
sors believe this will have a
two -fold goal of reaching
thousands of hunters from
other Oregon areas and to
encourage similar programs
throughout the stale.
Sponsors of the program do
not believe this will totally
eliminate the problem that
exists. The only solution to
the rowdy who thrives on van
dalism and destruction is to
watch him, ridicule him, and
finally, if necessary, run him
out of the woods. The Grant
county group feels there is no
place in the woods for this
type of individual.
of whipping them into his
kind of football team and
the first big payoff arrived
surprisingly early.
It came Saturday when the
Nebraska team, coached by
46-year-old veteran Bob De
vaney, upended a highly fa
vored Michigan, 25-13, in one
of the young season's biggett
surprises.
That effort was good
enough to win for Devaney
the title of United Press In
ternational "Coach of the
Week," in college football.
"In reality, it was probably
the biggest single win I'v
ever been a part of," Devaney
said.
Making it doubly sweet was
that it was brought off at
Michigan's huge stadium, in
full sight of thousands of Dc
vaney's Michigan friends. De
vaney, whose high school and
collegiate record has been
studded with success, spent
14 years as a high school
coach in Michigan and four
years as a Michigan State as
sistant before he compiled a
35-10-5 mark in five seasons
at Wyoming university.
He didn't hesitate when ask

Nebraska when he had a good
thing going at Wyoming. He
said he and the assistants who state had in the university $
followed him knew about football program
