Highway Dividers
Prevent Accidents
New York-(UPH-Hcad-on col
lisions on major highways
could be practically eliminat
ed by use of dividers to sep
erate traffic moving in oppo
site directions, according to
highway authorities.
Statistics complied by safe
ty experts indicate such crash
es account for about 4,000 of
the estimated 38,000 lives lost
annually in motor vehicle ac
cidents. High-speed toll road author
ities, notably those operating
the state turnpikes in New
Jersey and Pennsylvania, are
turning increasingly to steel
median beam type guard rails
to prevent head-on collisions
of vehicles crossing into op
posite lanes of on-coming
traffic.
The New Jersey turnpike,
most heavily travelled toll
road in the nation, has not
experienced one fatality due
to head-on collisions since in
stallation of a metal guard
over its 118-mile course, ac
cording to Joseph Morecraft
Jr., chairman of the Turnpike
authority. -
The 22 -year -old Pennsyl
vania turnpike, oldest of all
toll roads in the United States,
recently passed the half-way
mark in a program to install
steel guard rails on its 470
mile route.
Tests by California slate
highway authorities with sev
eral types of steel dividers on
heavily - travelled freeways
showed practical elimination
of head-on accidents, highway
officials said.

Bold Swim for Freedom
Berlin TUPD A coal miner
who leaped from a bridge
98 feet to freedom in a bor
der canal said Tuesday he
drank a bottle of schapps to
work up courage for his
flight.
The miner, Peter M., 26,
said he was so flustered that
he swam about 65 yards in
the wrong direction to the
eastern bank and had to
turn around and swim the
entire 180-yard-long canal
to the British sector bank.
The miner jumped from
the 98 - foot railway bridge
over the Humboldt Barge
Harbor on the border be
tween East and West Berlin.
The harbor connects Span
dau Canal and Spree river.
Police said it was almost
miraculous that he was un
injured. He was taken to a West
Berlin hospital for an exam
ination and then sent to a
refugee camp.
"I climbed over the wall
and made my way .unno
ticed to the elevated rail
