With the Caveman leading 20 to 7, John Bush of the Comets snared a GP pitchout and romped 35 yards to score. Phllburn Brown ran the extra but a penalty nullified it and the next try failed. That made the score 20 to 13. Brown booted on an onside kickoff try but Fred Marshall nabbed the ball before it had gone 10 yards. The Comets were penalized five yards and Brown kicked from the Crater 35. This time Dave Twidell fell on the ball at mldfield, giving Crater pos session with 15 seconds left. Taylor Tallies Twidell heaved a pass to about the GP 20. A GP de fender Jumped up and hit the ball. Crater's Chuck Taylor then caught the pigskin and ran to the goal. Brown con verted to knot the fray. Tay lor, who turned out Just a week ago, was playing his first game of football. Then came a respectable foe, a hard-punching Swede named Ingemar Johans son. And the scorn piled higher when Johansson had knocked him out. Regains Till Patterson beat him back, be coming the first man ever to regain this most coveted of all the ring's titles. Yet there was even more suspicion and disdain when, in a third bout, Johansson showed a classic re luctance to do battle once the punches piled up. There were others more threatening and more deserv ing waiting in line but next he went against Tom McNeo ley, a broth of a boy from Boston who was merely a puglistic stew. The scorn was even more now and while New York turned thumbs down on the threatening Lis ton, Patterson in his pride and his certainty Insisted that Lis ton should be his next foe. There is much in the back ground of Liston, an arrogant man, to shudder at the pos sible developments of his reign. But you can't take it away from him that Tuesday night he shattered Patterson with a handful of punches. And the odds are that it will when they meet again. Liston was destruction personified. Patterson merely was the "champion" most of his de tractors had insisted he waj all the time. Crackers Gain Little Series Atlanta - (UPD - The Atlanta Crackers, comeback wonders of the International league, meet Louisville tonight in the first game of the Little World Series. The Crackers earned a berth in the best-of-seven series against the American associa tion team by beating Jackson ville, 3-1, Tuesday night in the rubber game of the Inter national league playoffs. Protho Puts Neil at Tackle Corvallis - (UPD - Oregon State football coach Tommy Prothro has switched Jerry Neil from end to tackle. Neil caught- the game -winning touchdown pass against Iowa State last Saturday. The move was necessitated by injuries. Tri-City Ties With LA Angels Pasco, Wash. -UPD- The Trl City Braves of the Class B Northwest league have signed a full working agreement with the Los Angeles Angels of the American league, Char He Van Sickel, president of Tri-City Sports Inc., an nounced today. The Braves, who almost folded after the 1961 season, won the second half North west league pennant and topped the league in attend ance this year. The club re ceived help from all major league learns during the 1962 season. In standing off this 18th challenge for the bottomless silver pitcher which the Unit ed States won from England in 1851, the Weatherly, her skipper, Bus Mosbacher, and her crew scored one of their most decisive victories of the series. "You were too damn good," said Sir Frank Packer, the Australian newspaper pub lisher who headed a syndicate which brought Gretel here. The Australian challenger won only one race in the series. "We'll probably be back, I hope we'll be back," Packer said. "And whether we lost or not, the sun will come up tomorrow Just the same. Red Devils Bill Crater This Week Coquille - Juniors and sophomores must be develop ed if the Coquille Red Devils are going to do anything this season. That was the pre-season ap praisal of Coach Bill Vlcek whose Devils entertain the Crater Comets here on Friday. The Devils have eight letter- men and eight seniors on their roster. Coquille can field a letter- man backfield of Pat Shcly, tailback; Dan Fish, fullback; Stormy Floten, quarterback, and Jack Wilson at right half back. Shely weighs 205 pounds and Fish 180. Floten is described as the team's best passer. Other vets are Don Dickey, end; Charley Anderson, cen ter, and Dennis Lee and Bob Marklund, guards.
