PETERSON UPI Sports Editor Chicago -IUPD- Charles Son ny Liston has been called a lot of things, many of them uncomplimentary. But today you have to call this oft-arrested son of an Arkansas sharecropper the heavyweight champion of the 'world. . . . The proof of the pugilistic pudding - whether it's more of the same out of his spotted past or a fresh, unsullied slate - depends now on this big, powerful rhan with the flash ing fists. - .. Seldom has a man started with so few opportunities and, like the last page out of a fairy tale, hit it so big. The question now is about those behind him. Nobody denies that he once was controlled by Bllnky Pal ermo, a man now appealing his conviction for conspiracy. That means controlling the fates, destinies of certain box ers and certain boxing events. , Reputedly Sonny is "clean" now. Hardly Time To Finish Popcorn at Fight; Blows Would Have Felled Ox f 12.931 PER SECOND Chicago -IUPU- Floyd Patter son stood on his feet for one minute and 56 seconds Tues day night before Sonny Lis ton decked him for the full count. Patterson will be paid an estimated $1.5 million for his brief title defense. On an elapsed time basis, Patterson thus will receive some $12,031 for each second he was on his feet. Liston will receive an estimated $400,000, or $3,448 a second. 8.217 WATCH FIGHT ... Portland - IUPD A crowd of 8.217 turned ' out Tuesday night to watch the Sonny Lis-ton-Floyd Patterson fight on closed circuit television here. By GEORGE BELL What appeared to be about half the male population of Medford - together with a few brave women - jammed their way into the Cratcrian theater last night to watch the Liston Patterson heavyweight cham pionship fight on closed cir cuit television. They had all hardly settled down in their seats in antici pation of what most people thought was going to be a great fight, when, with aston ishing suddenness, It was all over, and It was time to get up and go home. The champion, the man they had cheered and applaud ed when he first appeared on the screen, had been smashed to the canvas with a series of pile-driving blows that would have felled an ox. Ht'i Got Him" And it all happened in just 2:06 of the first round. Why there was hardly time to fin ish the popcorn. When Patterson lurched drunkenly under the first massive punch, somebody in the audience yelled, "He's got him!" And so he had. With the power of a crazed rhinoceros. Liston hit the champion with a final solid left hook on the side of his already addled head, and Patterson went down, To be sure he got up. But by then the referee had al ready counted up to 10. Pat terson stood on shakey legs and looked blcarily around for his opponent, but the third man in the ring - last night an angel of mercy - stepped in front of him and signaled the end of the fight. Ring Seelhi Instantly, bedlam broke loose in Comiskcy park. Where a minute before there had only been three men, now suddenly the ring seethed with frantic humanity. The ringside announcer kept saying that in just a minute his partner would get a microphone up to Liston so he could tell the viewers how it felt to have just knocked out the champion. Indeed, to everyone ! amazement, the man finally made it, just In time to direct Liston's attention to a tele vision monitor which began to show a videotape of the brief first round. As they watched, the an nouncer asked Liston if Pat terson had hurt him with any punch during the encounter. "Nan, said the new heavy weight champion of the world. Too Stunned ' In a minute or two, the lights came on in the theater. Someone nearby said, "That's all, men." And people began to file out. Back In Chicago, a pair of reserve gladiators was hastily brought into the ring to enter lain any fight fans who might have felt they had been short changed by the quick knock out. But in the Craterian theater in Medford, Oregon, only a handful of souls, who were probably too stunned to move, stayed In their seats to watch. The rest of us left, shaking our heads. I always have gone to fights, even the Golden Gloves because I believe In boxing for what It means and what it can do for a man who has been down in life. With this victory, I have made a big jump forward and if the public will give me a chance, I am sure I will prove as worthy a champion as Floyd was - and that was a good one. While we were still in the ring after the knockout, I thanked him for having been so much of a man as to give me this chance. I told him I would be as much of a man towards him. Yes, he can act a return, as soon as Jack Nilon can get the gloves on me again. Seriously, he doesn't have to worry - he will get his chance. I knocked out Patterson with two good left hooks at the ropes and the right to the body. I believe now 1 destroyed the past as well as Floyd Pat terson. A team of four neuro surgeons said the handsome modern-day "Bull of the Pam pas," once a lop-ranked heavy weight, now was able to blink his eyes, to swallow and to Sonny Liston Rules as Heavy weight Champ Patterson Stopped in First Round By JACK CUDDY UPI Sports Wriltr Chicago-flJPU-Big Sonny Lis ton, the first former convict to become world heavyweight champion, will be offered an opportunity to repeat his 2 minute, 6-second knockout over Floyd Patterson In Feb ruary or March, probably at Miami Beach, it was learned authoritatively today. AI Bolan of Championship Sports, who promoted the third shortest - and the rich est - heavyweight title fight in history at Comlskey Park Tuesday night, said today he wants to arrange the return Liston - Patterson champion ship match within the next five or six months. , Bolan declined to indicate any probable site. But anoth er official of Championship Sports disclosed: "Al wants that return fight at Miami Beach more than any place else." Liston, the son of a poverty ridden Arkansas sharecrop per, earned sports' richest title and about $400,000 with a left hook that floored Floyd and left him unable to regain his feet before referee Frank Sikora had counted 10 In the first round. Today Liston repeated his statement that he will go through with his contract to give Patterson a return shot at the title "just as soon as possible." "I won't make no trouble about that return bout," the new 28-year-old champion de clared. "I want to be a worthy champion - a real good one. And I'll be just that - as good or better than Floyd was - if the public gives me a chance." Although Liston of Phila delphia had gone into the ring favored at 7Vj to 5 be cause of his many physical advantages, the crowd of 26,000 in the White Sox ball park was almost astounded when Sonny knocked the champion out in the first round. The quick kayo sapped much of the prestige Floyd had earned by becoming the first man to recapture the heavy title. But, because 27-year-old Patterson Is the same fellow who came back from a seven knockdown third-round kayo by Ingemar Johansson in 1959 to win back the title from Ingemar on a fifth-round kayo in I960, his return fight with Liston may again attract gross receipts approaching $5,500,000 - the estimated to tal for the live gate, $665, 420 at Comiskey Park, plus the receipts from closed-cir cuit television to theaters in the United States and Canada, and movies, radio, foreign kinescope and other ancilla ries. Electrifies Crowd Liston brought the crowd to its feet wen he staggered the smaller champion with a left hook and then spun him into the ring-ropes with a right uppercut to the chin. Big Sonny sensed the "kill" and barraged his wilting op ponent with his huge 14-Inch fists until a left hook explod ed on the side of Floyd's jaw and dropped him to the can vas. It was the 13th knock down during Floyd's two tenures as champion. Patterson gamely pushed himself half off the canvas and remained there on the side of one hip with his right arm supporting him while referee Frank Sikora tolled off the count above him. Pat terson almost got to his feet at the count of 10 but not quite. Sonny, weighing 25 pounds more than Floyd at 214 to 189, achieved the third fast est kayo in heavyweight title history when Patterson was counted out at 2:06. Tommy Burns had belted out Jem Roche in 1:28 in 1908; and Joe Louis disposed of Max Schmeling at 2:04 in their second fight in 1938. Quickest Roche and Schmeling both were challengers, so Patter son suffered the quickest knockout of any heavyweight in a title fight. It was the 27lh straight victory for Liston who scored his 34th win and 24th kayo in 35 professional fights since he learned to box in prison. Sonny "did time" in the Mis souri state penitentiary for armed robbery and in the St. Louis jail for assault on I policeman. He was arrested on 17 other occasions on oth er charges. Because of Sonny's unsa vory background, neither the Tax Agents Move To Tie Up Gate Receipts of Bout By JERRY LANDAUER Washington - IUPD- Federal tax agents today moved to confiscate the multimillion dollar gate receipts from Tuesday night's Sonny Liston Floyd Patterson heavyweight championship fight because of unpaid tax claims against the promoters. Internal ravanut service action in tying up recalpts of last night's title boxing bout included the Craterian theater here. Theater Man agar Bob Corbin said ht had instructions from an IRS agant not to pay out any of tha fight receipts to anyone but tht federal agency. In major cities across the country, they served liens to taling nearly $3.9 million to tie up the proceeds from the closed-circuit television show ing of the fight at movie the aters and the fight itself. The federal agents were sta tioned at 260 theaters across the country Tuesday night, prepared to file the attach ment notices before the fight ended. But a spokesman said Liston's knockout of Patter son at 2:06 of the first round disrupted this plan. Targets of the crackdown were Championship Sports, Inc., which promoted the fight, and Graff, Rainer and Smith Enterprises Inc., which sponsored the profitable closed circuit television showing. An internal revenue service spokesman said both had failed to file tax returns last year. The action could mean that neither Patterson, the de. throned heavyweight cham pion, nor Liston, the new title. holder, will collect their purses promptly. The internal revenue serv' ice spokesman said the agency moved to tie up the gate re' ceipts and the television and radio income to make sure that all tax liabilities will be fully satisfied. "We're trying to freeze, tie up or seize this money wher ever we can," an official ex. plained. A spokesman said the basis for the seizure was the failure of the fight and tel evision promoters to file tax returns last year.
