Yanks Wrap Up American League Pennant

The old champs got their
knockout, too, with the time
tested one-two punch of Man
tle and Ford.
' And so today it's only a
question of whether it'll be
the Los Angeles Dodgers or
San Francisco Giants in the
opposite dugout when the
New York Yankees begin the
defense of their world base
ball championship. -
- The Yankees made it offi
cial Tuesday night when they
clinched their second straight
pennant under Ralph Houk
and their 27th flag in all with
an 8-3 victory over the Wash
ington Senators. It was- the
knockout blow -as far as the
Minnesota Twins were con
cerned although the Cleveland
Indians later added the coup
de grace with a 5-1 triumph
over the Twins.
- Mickey Mantle and Whitey
Ford, who are always ready
tor a party, were the fellows
who flashed the signal to pop
the champagne corks. ,
; Mantle enjoyed a perfect
night at bat with four singles
and a walk, driving in two
runs and scoring two others,
while Ford scattered 12 hits
and struck out six in going
the distance for his nth win
of the season. Bill Skowron
also drove in two runs with a
ingle and his 23rd homer and
Tony Kubek had three hits in
the Yankees' 16-hit attack.
Far From Over
; The National league race,
meanwhile, is far from over-
with the Giants making a late
push and the Dodgers drag
ging their heels.
The Giants cut their first-
place deficit to a mere two
games on Tuesday night when
they beat the St. Louis Car
dinals, 4-2, and the Houston
Colts topped the Dodgers, 3-2,
in 10 innings. The Dodgers'
magic number remained at
tour with both them and the
Giants having five games to
play.
Jack Sanford pitched a sev
en-hitter to raise his record
to 23-7 behind a nine hit at
tack that included two hits
each by Matty Alou, Willie
Mays and Tom Haller. Bill
White homered for the Cardi
nals. Maury Wills stole two bases
to raise his record total to
99 but Dick Farrell scrambled
out of an assortment of tight
spots to score his 10th win
for the Colts. Ed Roebuck,
who hadn't lost a game in
two years and had a 10-0
record this season, suffered
the defeat when Al Spangler
homered in the top of the
10th.
The Detroit Tigers beat the
Los Angeles Angels, 3-2, and
the Boston Red Sox defeated
the Chicago White Sox, 4-0,
in other AL games while the
Cincinnati Reds shaded the
Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1, and
the Milwaukee Braves down
ed the New York Mets, 7-3,
in other NL action.

selling World Series tickets in
San Francisco and tranquil

blow the pennant.
Sure, Los Angeles was in
front by two full games when
the day began and there's
only five left for both the
Dodgers and Giants - includ
ing San Francisco's afternoon
contest today against St.
Louis.
But only last Sunday the
Dodgers were In front by four
games. Tuesday it was three.
And those Cardinals - the
only team to hold an edge
over the Dodgers this year -come
to town Friday night
for a three-game series that
finishes the regular season. If
the Giants are close, St. Louis
could belt the Dodgers out of
a flag - the way it did to
Milwaukee on the final week
end of the 1956 season.
Giants Accept
Series Orders
San Francisco - a'PO - The
San Francisco Giants, who
moved to within two games
of Los Angeles Tuesday night
in the National league pen
nant race, have announced
they are accepting orders for
World Series tickets.
The announce m e n t was
made Tuesday night shortly
after the Giants defeated the
St. Louis Cardinals and the
Dodgers were beaten by Hous-
ton.
Tickets must be purchased
four-game sets, a Giant
spokesman said, and sales will
be conducted only through
the mail. All orders must be
accompanied by a certified
check or money order.
The cost of one box sent for
four games is $48, plus SI for

Tuesday night, the Yankee
manager first paid the cus
tomary tribute to his "old

Richardson, Ralph Terry and
Yogi Berra.
But he saved his greatest
praise for the rookies.
"They were simply extra
ordinary," he said. "And I
had to think where we'd have
been without them.'

"And don't forget Marshall
Bridges," Houk emphasized,
"I know he pitched over in
the National league before,
but he was a rookie with ui.

he never wavered once. -
"I thought we had the best
ball club all the way," he said.
"At no point did I ever think
we were going to lose, even
after we dropped those five
straight to Baltimore In late
