He had not had another such spell, and he did not feel at 4ivmtu au ill.. With such a story, together with the facts that he had a good ancestry, and had always been a pleasant, easy-going man, I could not believe he had had epilepsy; and, as I expected, his electroencephal ogram was perfectly normal. I thought of a beginning brain tumor, but in the ab sence of any mental symptoms or changes in personality, this diagnosis did not seem prob able. I sent him to a neurolo gist to see what could be found with a complete exam ination, but the neurologist could not make a diagnosis. Eventually we were left with the hunch that perhaps the man had had a small stroke. Last December, Dr. David J. LaFia discussed this prob lem of seizures which appear for the first time in persons past 20 years of age. As he said, the physicians must think of the development in the brain of some serious disease, such as a brain tumor or an aneurysm (a blow-out in an artery). Dr. LaFia told of a woman of 43 who had been having convulsive seizures lor five years. Studies revealed a tumor beginning in the in ner lining of her skull, and pressing on her brain. She was quickly cured with an operation. Syndicate, li2 A n examination of the backgrounds of the eyes and the fields of vision may then show changes characteristic of a brain tumor. The doctor must listen to the skull to see if he can hear a whirring sound such as would indicate the presence of an aneurysm. This can often be located with special X-ray technic, and then a surgeon may be able to remove it. There are dozens of tests that the neurologist will make as he searches for signs of in jury to some part of the brain. He will be much impressed if, like many persons with a brain tumor, the man answers questions with wise cracks and silly statements. If, with all the several neurologic tests, nothing is found, the skull may have to be X-rayed after the injection of air into the ventricles (normal cavities in the brain). A tumor will of ten push one of these cavities to one side or the other In many cases, the physi cian will have difficulty in convincing the patient that all of these tests are needed in the making of a diagnosis, and that often it is better to find and remove a brain tumor be fore it gets big and destructive. ml Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. Send for it by en closing 25 cents and a self- Showing Whit Faalhor Isn't Cowardice for Bird The first one who noticed it, whoever he was, undoubtedly was watching a bird whose outer tail feathers were white. And because the bird was frightened and flying away from the observer, the white outer feathers of the tail were conspicuous. So the man said, "He showed the white fea ther." It was an apt expression, and it struck the public fancy. It was a little tricky, and was adopted to indicate cowardice. Even those of us who have never noticed the white fea thers in a bird's tail know what is meant when the ex pression is used. The fact that birds show those feathers only when in flight is not because the bird is a coward, but because the bird can better direct its flight and maintain balance while in flight with the feathers fanned out. Flight does not mean cow ardice, but caution. A phrase coiner just assumed the bird was scared; it probably had sense enough to know its po sition was dangerous and showed common sense rather than cowardice. No 'Cold Feet' The bird's body temperature being what it naturally is -considerably higher than in other warm-blooded animals -would also preclude the pos- addressed, stamped envelope with your request to Dr. Wal ter C. So "showing the white feather" would be a little more cor rect. Those people - and they are many - who have had a pet parakeet, know that the bird's feet are never cold. A para keet or any bird perched on one's finger gives ample evi dence that it has very "hot feet." This condition exists whether the bird is frightened or not. Neither would it be accu rate to accuse a bird of having a "yellow streak" just because it might "turn tail" and fly instead of putting up a hope less fight against the hungry house cat. Flying away cer tainly could not be a sign of cowardice on the part of the bird in an instance such as this; rather, it would show a measure of good judgment. It's doubtful, too, that any bird could, in the face of dan ger, be said to be "faint-hearted." The bird might become so frightened its heart would in crease its beat even beyond the normal rapid heartbeat of most birds. But it surely could not actually be faint-hearted or white livered or displayinf i yellow streak. But as for "showing the white feather," that's some thing else again, and really is done. There is some sense to it in spite of the fact it doesn't indicate cowardice. The bird which can leap- into the air and fly away lives to fly another day.
