Charlotte H. - For weeks
he's been saying "Ella" in his
sleep.
Gordon H. - How can I be
held responsible for what I
jay while asleep?
Charlotte H. - I'm 26, con
sidered beautiful, and hold a
responsible job in a textile
firm. I've been married three
years. My husband is a dress
buyer. We're completely com
patible and in love with each
other at least I am. Lately
I'm not so sure about him, be
cause in the past few weeks
he's been mentioning an "El
la" in his sleep. He talks
quite distinctly when he
dreams, and since my name is
Charlotte, I'm mystified.
In the morning when I ask
him "Who's Ella?" he says "I
don't know what you're talk
ing about." Either he's a good
actor or he leads an exciting
dream life I know nothing
about. But he still ought to
be able to give me a better
explanation.
'.
Gordon H. - I didnt even
know that I talk in my sleep,
much less what I talk about.
For all I know, Charlotte
makes speeches out of dream
land, too, but I'm a deep sleep
er and I have no proof. May
be we should wire our bed
room for sound so I'll have a
playback the next morning
and be able to translate that
Ella business for Charlotte.
Maybe it's a name I read
In a book, although I don't re
call anything closer to it than
Cinderella. We have no em
ployees named Ella in the
plant. None of our friends is
Ella. And Charlotte knows I
have no time for an Ella. I
jneet her for lunch, which
means we have our three
meals together, plus our eve
nings. So, her suspicions make
no sense.
The Council - Oh, come off
it, Charlotte. You're sure
scraping the barrel looking
for trouble. You insist on mak
ing Gordon a most unhappy
fella over "Ella." A confident,
light - hearted wife would
think of a half a dozen pos
sible interpretations of the
sound, all innocent, and would
turn over peacefully to fin
ish her night's slumber. Ex
ample: Maybe he's yelling
"Ella-vator" during a night
mare in which he keeps miss
ing it on his business calls.
Example: He's calling for van
Ella ice cream? . . .
If that's the only reason
.for your distrust, you must
look within yourself to learn
why you feel so insecure and
what you're afraid of. And,
at the same time, Gordon, you
would do well to pay a little
snore flattering attention to
Charlotte in the plentiful
hours in which you are to
gether. Evidently she's a girl
for whom a flood of compli
ments comprised her daily
fare. With her beauty and
brains, she must have moved
among ego-bolstering excla
mations during most of her
pre-marital life. So, look up
from your paper more often.
Some domestic buttering-up is
in order.
When a marriage has been
moving along normally, a wife
can sense any serious rift in
the lute. She doesn't need
sleep talk as her clue. In
fact, a wise wife discounts
this unconscious babble. Ei
ther Charlotte trusts Gordon,
or she doesn't. If she doesn't
. and she indicates no real
reason not to all that's left
for tracking down "Ella's"'
identity is a lie detector ap
plied to Gordon. But' there
wouldn't be much left to their
love and marriage after such
an extreme tactic, either. So
our advice is for Charlotte to
think up a few more "light"
explanations, similar to those
we invented above, for the
nocturnal presence of Ella.
(Might be a nice name for
their first daughter.)
Bachelors, however, might
take a tip from a prominent
physician who boasts: "My
wife's name in Jane, my
nurse's name is Jane, my sec
retary's name is Jane. So, if
J talk in my sleep, I'm safe."
