Evans Valley Prior to June 30, 1962, fire protection
. in the Evans Valley area was a matter of chance and
luck.
If a man's house was burning down, he could call the
'. Rogue River Rural Fire department or the State Forestry
department, either or both of which would come to the
rescue if it were free to do so .
'; But the chances were that whatever was on fire would
have burned to the ground by the time help arrived. The
. community of Wimer, center of Evans Valley, is 10 miles
from Rogue River.
Today, however, the story has changed. By dialing
JU 2-0263 (a private line for reporting fires only), a
resident in distress can call out the Evans Valley volun
teer fire department. The department has a truck, volun
teers to man it, a fire chief to direct operations and a
nearly completed fire station.

And petitions are soon to be circulated to seek an
election on formation for a fire protection district here.
How all this came about is a story of collective com
munity action.
It took tragedy to get things started two homes were
lost inside of a month early in 1062.
On May 25 a meeting was held at the hall of Enter
prise Grange 489 in Wimer and initial donations toward
formation of a fire department were collected. Each
family in the area was asked to donate $25 or as much
as it could.
Donations ranging from $2 to $50 came in. To date,
- $2930.75 has been collected, and there have been 159
contributions. Expenditures so far have amounted to
$1,564.86, and out of that amount the department has
purchased a $1,000 fire truck and built most of a fire
station.
The truck is a Pirsch high pressure pumper with two
one-inch lines, one three-Inch line, hand equipment for
30 men and a 550-gallon tank.
The Grange gave the department a 25-year lease (at
$1 a year) on property immediately west of its building
in the middle of Wimer, and the fire station was erected,
with many hours of labor and materials donated.
The truck was purchased June 30. On July 18, the
department fought Its first fires, two of them two of the
12 that broke out near Grants Pass and Rogue River
that day and were believed to have been the work of an
arsonist.

In one ot the incidents the department saved a resi
dence from burning. In all, the deportment has saved
Ihree or four homes and some $30,000 worth of property
since it came into being.
Excellent cooperation from the slate forestry and
Rogue River Rural departments has been enjoyed, said
Bill Simmons, who was named chief of the Evans Valley
department.
Plans now call for setting up a fire protection district
with power to tax. The department would still operate
on a volunteer basis with no full-time employees, how
ever. '
A map of the proposed district, encompassing 200
residents and 45 square miles, approximately, was drawn
up and submitted to the Jackson County Court, which in
turn gave district proponents a list of property owners
in the area.
Petitions will shortly be ciculated, seeking to place
the district formation question on the ballot.

a private investigator.

and Huffman said that two
week-ends of work should
complete the range and allow
the youngsters a safe place lo
shoot their guns.
A special plea IS being
made to all youth and their
parents who have taken the
gun safety course and thus ex
pressed their interest in shoot
ing guns.
A regular club will be spon
sored for these youngsters
complete with instructors,
shooting matches, and a good
sate place for the family to
enjoy an inexpensive outing.

Education Class

class will be started Thurs
day at 10 a.m. in the Eagle
Point Grange hall.
Any lady in the community
who is interested in better
physical health and in toning
up her muscles is invited to
come down and join the
group under the direction of
Mrs. James (Lois) Wilson
free of charge.
Mrs. Wilson is a qualified
instructor for these exercises
and has had at least one class
each year for the past three
years.
Ladies are advised to wear
slacks with loose legs or
leotards and may participate
in cither all or part of the
education program as they
feci they can take or are in
terested in. The exercises
themselves are recommend
ed for pregnant mothers also.
A request for an evening
class has been made and Mrs.
Wilson said she would be
happy to conduct the pro
gram one evening a week if
enough interest is shown.
All interested should con

welcome.

the Central Point and Gold
Hill areas Thursday between
the hours of 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The light blubs are pack
aged six to a carton and in
clude two 30w, two 75w, and
two 100W. They are the new
square shaped Westinghouse
Eye Saver bulbs. They will
sell for $1.75 per carton.
The proceeds of this sale
will be used to help finish
the Crater High stadium. Stu
dents from Crater High will
be assisting in this drive and
will be calling on residents

Sabin Clinics Set
For Happy Camp
Happy Camp - The Happy
Camp Union Elementary
school has been named one
of the designated places in
Siskiyou county for the Sabin
oral polio clinics lo be held
this fall.
The clinics here will be
held on September 25, Octo
ber 23 and November 27,
from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the
multi-purpose room of the
elementary school. The cost
will be 75 cents for the three
doses and tickets will be
available through the school
nurse and at the clinic.
The Siskiyou County Med
ical society, in conjunction
with the National Polio foun
dation, in an all-out effort to
conquer polio, is sponsoring
these clinics in the county.
Three types of Sabin vac
cine will be given separately,
one month apart. The vaccine
is dropped on a sugar cube,
and eaten, painlessly.

Plans To Employ
Full Time City Clerk
Talent - The Talent City
Council has decided to employ
a city clerk as of next Jan. 1,
and applications for the post
are now being accepted.
On the motion of Council
man Lee Boyd, the council
voted at its September meet
ing to create the new position
- a full time employee with
an office in the city hall and
duties in the water, recorder
and treasurer departments.
Written applications may be
sent to Mrs. P. J. McAbee care
of the city hall. Deadline for
applications is Dec. 1. Appli
cants must have a knowledge
of typing and bookkeeping
and must attend council meet
ings, the council announced.

meeting, it was announced
that a proclamation by Mayor
Wayne Rcichstein In connec
tion with the successful Aug.
30 water bond election in Tal
ent has been posted at four
locations - the city hall, Tal
ent Hardware, Talent Thrift
and the post office.
Amend Charter
The proclamation states
that in accordance with the
special election of Aug. 30 an
amendment is being added to
the city charter to authorize
bonded indebtedness of up to
$185,000 for the enlargement
and improvement of the city's
water facilities.
The amendment also auth
orizes the city cotincll to levy
necessary taxes to meet such
obligations.
The Aug. 30 election results
approved a city plan to con
struct facilities to take city
water out of Wagner creek.
Present supply is entirely
from wells.

City Councilmen
Announce Plans
Jacksonville - Two Jack
sonville City Councilmen have
announced they plan to seek
re-election, while a third has
revealed he will not run again.
Lind McBeth and George
Brewer will run for re-election
Nov. 6, it was revealed at last
night's city council meeting
here, but Vance Adams indi
cated he will step down from
his post.
Mayor E. O. Graham, whose
term also expires this year, is
reported still undecided on his
plans.
Nominating petitions are
now available and must be
filed by Oct. 2 with signatures
of at least 20 registered voters.
In other matters, council
men were informed that pay
ments have now been com
pleted on the W. S. Darley

A. Van der Werff from Ab
coude. The Netherlands, have
recently been reunited with
their cousin, John B. H. Ley
en at Rogue River.
They had the opportunity
for a visit with Mr. and Mrs.
Leyen September 14 to 17 at
the Leyen's home on West
st.
The couple traveled on the
Greyhound bus "See America
Tickets" through the United
States after attending two
congresses on water research.
Van der Werff, being a bi
ologist and geologist related
to the Geological Survey of
The Netherlands at Haarlem,
and especially interested in
unicellular organisms named
diatoms living in water, was
invited to these congresses,
held in Cincinnati, Qhio, and
in Madison, Wis.
A grant by The Nether
lands made it possible for him
to visit the following places:
New York; Philadelphia;
Washington; Roanoke, Va.;
Knoxville, Tenn.; Cincinnati,
