first quarter defict and held
the Grizzlies scoreless over
the last three periods Satur

the California city.
Ashland led 7 to 6 at the

Forty Niners
On Pants Seat
San Francisco - UTII - The
San Francisco Forty Niners
are opening the National Foot
ball league campaign just the
way the San Francisco Giants
are closing the baseball sea
son - on the seat of their
pants.
"We'll try to block and
tackle a little better against
Detroit next week," Red
Hickey, the Forty Niners
glum coach, raid Sunday aft
er they opened the NFL sea
Eon by taking a 30-14 beat
ing from the Chicago Bears.
"About the only injury I
know of is Jim Johnson, who
has a shoulder pointer. We
didn't hit too many people
hard enough to gel hurt."
The Bears, with lineback
ers Bill George, Joe Fortun
alo, and Larry Morris coming
tip with a bewildering assort
ment of "red-dogging," limit
ed the Forty Niners to 72 net
yards gained passing and 121
yards rushing.
"We used some new de
fensive plays and they came
off very well," coach George
Halas of the Bears conceded.

off the Wolves kickoff which
followed a 55-yard punt re

on a scoring play. Nick Crot

Suns, Crackers
In IL Finale
United Press International
The pennent - winning Jack
sonville Suns were favored to
win the International league's
final playoffs which they will
open tonight against the At
lantic Crackers in Atlanta.
The Suns moved into the
finals by defeating the Ro
chester Red Wings, 4-0, Sun
day night.
Atlanta also won its semi
final series against Toronto
by the same margin, four
games to two, with a 5-2 victo
ry Saturday night.
The House public lands sub-1
committee has sent its ver
sion of the wilderness bill to
the full interior and insular
affairs committee, according
to the Wildlife Management
institute. The proposal bears
little' resemblance to S 174,
the wilderness bill that passed
the Senate last year by a 73
to 8 vote or to HR 776, intro
duced much earlier by Con
gressman John P. Saylor
(Pa.). The full committee has
scheduled executive sessions
on the bill later this month.
Committee approval normally
is required before a bill can
be debated and voted on the
House floor.
WILDERNESS?
The subcommittee's bill
hooks on a whole new title
which would establish a pro
cedure for all withdrawals,
reservations, restrictions, and
changes in the use designa
tions or classnications of pub
lic lands and national forests.
An act of Congress would be
required for most use changes
of areas larger than 5000
acres. Only the present "wil
derness.'V'wild." and "canoe"
areas would be incorporated
into the wilderness protection
system. An act of Congress
would be required before any
existing primitive or other ap
propriate wilderness areas are
included in the system. Limit
ed commercial use would be
permitted in the designated
wilderness areas, and mining
and mineral leasing would be
permitted for a 10-year pe
riod. The wilderness designa
tion of all areas would be re
viewed every 25 years.
POOR TIMING
We might as well consider
the wilderness bill somewhat
of a lamed duck for the time
being. The lumber industry
has made such an issue of its
need for restrictions of free
trade and competition in or
der to survive that there is
little chance of congressmen
being willing to bear the
brunt of like publicity. One
can well imagine the howl
that would be heard if a few
pieces of choice timberland
now were placed in wilder
ness status. The present move
to incorporate the sky lakes
basin between Crater lake
and Mt. McLoughlin into wil
derness status is sure to raise
mighty protest. The middle
fork of the Rogue is being
eyed by some as ripe for log
ncss will be difficult. The
lumber industry has too many
mills operating on not enough
timber, and any attempt to
shut off the available supply
in small part will be con
strued by some as akin lo
unAmericanism.
HABILITATION
The game commission is in
the midst of a program to pro
vide spawning beds for the
kokanee of Willow lake. Last
year there were several hun
dred spawners that were un
able to successfully spawn be
cause of a lack of gravel for
that purpose. The commission
plans on placing up to 40
cubic yards of spawning
gravel near the inlets of the
lake in the hopes that these
landlocked salmon will use
the gravel and augment the
population through a semi
natural means.
GOOD SPORT
The kokanee is an excellent
fish, both in the catching and
in the eating. Those in Wil
low lake are up to 17 inches
long and provide an exciting
tussle before netting. A ma
ture female spawns about
2000 eggs and the fry are
fast growing in this particular
environment. The fact that
fishermen need to keep in
mind with regard to catching
this fish is that it is a deep
feeding fish that is found on
or near the bottom. Nuff said.
THE ANGLER'S LOG
This is the time of the year
when the fishing gets better
and worse at the same time.
The lakes are beginning lo
cool off but so are the fisher
men. School lakes many fam
ilies back to town where the
effort to make a trip back to
the lake is thought lo be too
much. Steelhead start show
ing in the rivers lo entice oth
ers away. And hunting sea
sons lake those who have ex
isted through the summer
while waiting for another
chance to try gun and dog
together.
