The House, in accepting a
House-Senate conference re

posal, paved the way for quick
final congressional approval
of the plan.
All that remained was for
the Senate to go through the
formality of reaffirming its
stand in favor of construction
of the 800,000 kilowatt power
plant by the Washington Pub
lic Power Supply System
(WPPSS).
Best Attempt
Before approving the power
plant by a voice vote, the
House beat back an attempt
by Rep. James Van Zandt (R
Pa.) to send the proposal back
to conference.
The roll call vote gainst
recommittal was 186 to 150.

knell of the coal industry in
Washinglon." he declared.
The compromise as approv
ed by the conferees calls for:

its operation for power pur
poses to be borne by WPPSS.

to be passed on to its custom
ers through higher rates.
The offer of 50 per cent
of the power to private utili
ties.

ry M. Jackson (D-Wash.) said
approval of the Hanford,
Wash., nuclear power project
would be "speedily ratified"
by the Senate.
Jackson, who led the suc
cessful fight for the plan in
the Senate, said Friday House
approval was a "victory for
local citizens who never gave
up hope.
"Not only will taxpayers j
recoup as much as S125 mil
lion over the years, but pres
tige of the country will have
been enhanced enormously
by having brought into being
the world's largest nuclear
power plant," he said.
"In having the world's larg
est power plant it will help
to give us the same prestige
that came from having '.he
world's largest hydroelectric
dam at Grand Coulee until
recent Soviet accomplish
ments.

The committee, at a closed
session, approved the Senate
passed bill that would let the
President mobilize up to 150,
000 reservists if he sees fit
while Congress is adjourned.
But GOP members com
plained about plans to call the
bill up for House action Mon
day under a special procedure
barring amendment limiting
debale, and requiring a two
thirds vote for passage.
They said there was no rea
son the legislation could not
be considered in the custom
ary way.
"The lives of 150,000 Amer
icans are affected," said Hep.
Charles S. Gubser (R-Calif.).
"I resent and I protest this
procedure."
