Sparked by halfback Jim Leagjeld and quarterback Bob Warrington, the Bears of central Oregon utilized pass interceptions, effective air at tack and third period domi nation to overcome the Fire balls. Leagjeld ran two pass thefts for touchdowns. An intercep tion by Dave Shclton wiped out a Comet scoring bid. War rington passed to Shclton for one score. A safety added to the Bruin final count. Crater's lone touchdown came on a thriller punt run back lo halfback Joe Mc Calvy in the second quarter. Darryl Summcrfield, Comet quarterback, gathered in a punt by Leagjeld. He re versed to McCalvy who rambled 61 yards with some fine blocking to go across the goal. So good was the deception that three Bears tackled Summcrfield after he had handed off the ball. Leagjeld Strike! Bend struck first with sud ricness in the late first quar ter. Leagjeld snagged a swing pass by Summcrfield and surged 35 yards to the Crater zone. The visitor aggregation picked up the safety in the mid-third canto. Crater high's determined line had made a tremendous stand holding the Bears for downs after they had first-downed on the Comet two. Crater took over the ball just inches from tnc goal. Bend's Shelton, with one foot practi cally in the end zone, grabbed the ball and headed up the field. He reached the Crater 35 before the efforts of Sum mcrfield, McCalvy and Roger Neufeld halted him. Bend was thrown back to the 39 and Harold Weathers punted to the eight. McCalvy reeled off nine vards for the Comets and Swanson ran 15 more to the 32. A Summcrfield heave to McCalvy put the ball on the 44. Illegal use of hands cost Crater back to its 2B. Sum mcrfield unleashed a long aerial to Bransom who was downed on the 22 by Cotting hnm and Bob Cannon after a gain of 50 yards. Phoenix Pirates Thump Oakland Gridders 33-7 Phoenix-Powerful Phoenix, defending state champion in Clasi A-2, opened its 1962 grid campaign here Friday night by thumping Oakland 33 to 7 in a non-ieague game. The Pirate! scored off the opening kickoff on an 80-yard return by Ron Williams. But, they had to bust a 7 to 7 knot before going on to vic tory. Jim Consbruck's coversion kick gave Phoenix a 7 to 0 jump. Oakland came back to score Its only touchdown on a two yard run, by Jon Lam orcaux who also went over for the bonus count. Phoenix went ahead in the first quarter on a seven yard run by Consbruck.
