Comets Spark Up As Contest With Bend Approaches
Central Point - "I think the
kids are getting ready for a
game."
So reported Keith Johnson,
Crater high, head football
coach, noting the progress of
his squad as it neared its open
ing conflict of the season.
The Comets entertain the
Bend Lava Bears this Friday
night. This tangle is set for
8:30 p.m. The game will fol
low dedication of the new
Crater stadium. Ceremonies
are set for 7:30 p.m.
Johnson Indicated that his
squad has seemed to perk up
in anticipation of the season
opener.
In discussing his personnel
position by position, Johnson
expressed particular pleasure
with the work of guard and
tackle John Harris. Primarily
a defensive man in the past,
Harris has blossomed as a
offensive player with startling
rapidity in recent drills. He's
been the Comets' best looking
lineman over the past three
or four days, the coach reported.

Phoenix To Oppose
Oakland on Friday
Phoenix - Phoenix High
school, put on the spot by the
Oregon Journal ratings, will
launch its 1962 football cam
paign with an all-lettcrman
starting lineup.
The Pirates, state A-2 co-
champions last year and
ranked No. 1 in their class in
last week's Journal poll, play
host to Oakland in an 8 p.m.
Friday game. Oakland has
dropped back Into B school
play because of enrollment
but is reported to have a
strong team just the same.
While Phoenix has a vet
cran gang, Coach Jack Wood
ward says, "It will be hard
to tell what we can do until
we play some games. We are
really lacking in depth. One
of our main problems will
be to develop capable re
serves." More Versatile
Woodward adds that he
feels that, as the Pirates go
along they II tend to be a
little more versatile than last
year's championship team
There is good team speed. The
club doesn't seem to have the
power of Inst year's crew.
Much of the 1961 offensive
power was in the person of
fullback Mike Consbruck
now a freshman at Linficld
college. Woodward feels that
Dennis Grennan will be a
good fullback but he's more
the halfback type of runner,
He has good speed.

Confident
Newport, R. I.-fUPD It wasn't
difficult to identify the rival

The Weatherly sailors were
wearing smiles of confidence;
crewmen of Australia's Gretel
were glum and worried.
Alan Payne, designer of
Gretel and official spokesman
for the Aussie challengers,
was particularly irritated be
cause of a story he read
Wednesday night that quoted
him as predicting the Ameri
can yacht would win in four
straight races. The best-of-seven
cup races begin Saturday.
