Medical school funs into an
apparent blank wall in treat
men or diagnosis because
there is no machine for a cer
Wn Job, it takes the easy way
out. It invents one.
This is the job of the
school's research instrument
department. George Johnson
and his staff specialize in de
veloping new machines, tech
nological aids that have never
before been made.
This is one of the reasons
why the words "medical dis
covery" at the school have
become a pat phrase.
Johnson, an electronics en
gineer, and his staff of. bi
ologists, machinists, an elec
tronics expert and an instru
ment repair man, have turned
many a doctor s wishes into
realities.
Instruments Acclaimed
Johnson says the average
job takes about six months,
from conception to comple
tion. Some jobs take as much
as 18 months. Some of their
medical instruments have
won national and world-wide
acclaim.
There are several machines
in the works at present. One
is a fetal heart rate recorder .
for the hospital's obstetrics
department. It will, when
completed, continuously
monitor the heart beat of an
unborn baby.
Johnson says the machine
separates the baby's heart
beat from that of the mother
and can be used instead of
x-ray to determine the exis
tence of twins. But it will be
used mainly during labor to '
check on the baby's heart
beat.
Another machine, developed
by Dr. Charles T. Dotter or
the radiology department,
gives a direct and continuing
reading of a patient's blood
pressure.
This machine eliminates
time-consuming conversion of
blood pressure figures and
gives the anesthesiologist a
constant check of the patient
during surgery and recovery.
Psychiatric Computer
One of the most interesting
of the department's works is
a computer used in psychia
tric interviews. It measures
the time it takes for a patient
to answer a question, his
number of interruptions and
how long he takes.
The machine was developed
for Dr. Joseph D. Matarazzo,
chairman of the department
of medical psychology. It was
hailed by the New Yorker,
tongue in cheek, as "one of
the computers that may some
day replace doctors."
The information it records
is tabulated and gives the
doctor immediate results to
aid him in helping his patient.
Another machine helps the
biochemistry department bet-
ter understand how oxygen in
the air supports life and how
food is transformed into body
energy. This machine is
geared to stop ac'.lon for
study at l'lOOO of a second.
One of the machines, to
measure the oxygen content
of the blood during heart sur
gery, is being manufactured
commercially.
Many other machines are
under development, some
large for large jobs, others to
cover minute details, all to
help doctors give better care.

pound is a deer, wildlife ex
pert Garner Fuller reports.
Considering hunting equip
ment, hunting lease prices
nd licenses, "the going price
for a deer in the Trans-Pecos
county of Texas is $125. If
you kill one that weighs 125
pounds, that is a dollar a
pound on the hoof," Fuller
says, adding that most deer
bagged are lighter than 125
pounds.
