So reported -Head Coach Bill McKibbin. Things an1 starting to pick up a little, he said. The coach mentioned that he and his staff were afraid to go ahead for a while until they got what they wanted working and, consequently, he feels the the Crusaders are about one week behind. McKibbin was referring to defensive preparation.;. Coaches were not satisfied with the blocking so they stayed with fundamentals and technique for a time before going on with defense. The club turned to defense yester day for the first time. Spirit Good There are no complaints concerning spirit or moral, declared the mentor. McKibbin said that he is pleased with the play of Pete Naumes at end, John Lucas at guard, Mike Stinson at cen ter and Jim Calhoun at quar terback. Tom Darland and Jim Webb are holding down first unit halfback spots. Jeff Randolph, veteran line backer who had nailed down the No. 1 fullback post, has been out of action for a week and a half because of an ankle injury. Tim Darland, a con $4.75 s Qt. Calhoun has been named team captain and Webb, Stin son, Randolph and Naumes as player representatives in liai son between squad and coaches. St. Mary's lost five men at tackles by graduation but boys drilling at those posi tions arc working hard and McKibbin remarked, "It looks like we will be better off than we anticipated." The Crusaders have a tre mendous grid turnout of 62. This is about 60 per cent of the boys in the school. McKibbin reported that it is planned to take 33 players to Glide. Eagle Pointers Girding For Opener With Bruins Eagle Point - Dale Herr mann, tackle, a sophomore, and Ron Patterson and Jerry Moore, guards, a junior and sophomore, respectively, have looked good in Eagle Point high football drills this week. That is the report of Coach Vern Steward as the Eagles prime for their season opener. Eagle Point will encounter Brookings in a non league game on Friday. Time is 8 p.m. on the Eagle field. Eagle Point will enter the fracas after a 4-3 record in 1961. Brookings was 3-6 last year. The Bruins of the coast area reportedly have 11 lettermen Eder Jofre Knocks Out Joe Med el Sao Paulo, Brazil - IUPD -Eder Jofre, the unbeaten world bantamweight cham pion, is improving with age. Two years ago, Jofre scored a 10th round knockout over Mexico's Joe Medel in Los Angeles. In a return bout Tuesday night at Ibiraqucra s'adium, Brazil's "Golden Bantam" kayoed Medel in six rounds. It was Jofre's fifth successful defense of the world 118 pound crown. Jofre now has scored 13 straight knockouts while stretching his unbeaten string of pro bouts to 45, including three draws. All told, the 26-year-old champ has 33 kayoes to his credit. Jacksonville, Toronto Win United Press International Two clutch home runs and some timely relief pitching helped the pennant-winning Jacksonville Suns lo their sec ond straight extra-inning vic tory over the Rochester Red Wings in Tuesday night's In ternational league semi-final playoff action. Elk Hunt Drawings Conducted Portland - About 75 sports men were on hand Sept. 7, at the game commission's office here to participate in the drawings tui the permit elk hunts. A total of almost 30.000 ap plications were included in the drawings for the 10,700 permits to be issued. Indvid ual chances in some areas were excellent while in popu lar elk hunting units or areas the odds ran as high as eight to one. Surprising was the Clatsop unit which for the second year failed to fill by the filing deadline. No drawing was held for this bull elk hunting unit and all persons who sub scribed proper applications will receive permits to hunt in this area. No surplus permits are available, however, as the unit was filled by late appli cations'. Also failing to fill by the filing deadline were the Wil son agricultural area, the Clat sop agricultural area, and the Shaw mountain hunt. No drawing was required for these areas and all persons who filed valid applications will receive permits. Only a few surplus permits were available for these areas which are expected to be fill ed by late applicants. All other elk units or areas were well oversubscribed and drawings hold. FIGHT SET Portland - (UP1I - Unbeaten Bobby Horn of Eugene and Ernie Gipson of Seattle will meet in a 10-round middle weight fight here Thursday night. Baltimore also paced all pro halfback Moore on waiv ers after he suffered a frac tured kneecap last Sunday and asked vaivers on rookie halfback llezekiah Braxton. A Colt spokesman said that if Moore is claimed by an other club, he will be re moved from the waiver list. Among tie other note worthy names to receive dis missal papers Tuesday were veteran back Johnny Olszew ski and Olympic gold medal winner Glenn Davis of the Detroit Lions and fullback Ron Halcher, the first Negro ever to sign with the Wash ington Redskins. Olszewski, better known as Johnny O., saw service with three clubs during his nine-year NFL career while Davis, twice an Olympic 400 meter hurdle champion, tried to make it as an end. Also dropped by the Lions was Willie McCiung, a seven year veteran as a tackle. The Redskins completed their roster paring by asking waiv ers on tackle Don Lawrence. But there are so many "ifs" involved in the whole team that coach Johnny McKay can't see how his team should be rated as a co-favorile with Washington to win the Big Six title. "We have the greatest, hardest-hitting fullback in the college ranks today in 231 pound Ben Wilson," says Mc Kay. "But his knee was op erated on for bone chips in June and we aren't sure when he'll be able to play. "We have two of the finest quarterbacks in the land in Pete Beathard and Bill Nel son.
