But in the last few years their theories have been sadly deflated by the discov ery, first, that in a few min utes a drug can produce in a healthy man a mental dis turbance which resembles schizophrenia, and In a few minutes an electroshock treat ment can bring a person out of a miserable depression. A an hour was mentally dis turbed. Today that drug is being widely used by "bio logic psychiatrists" in their efforts to understand mental disturbances. Since then a number of chemicals have been found, some of which are used by primitive "medicine men" to help them go into trance and see visions. A while ago physiologists found a very interesting drug - serotonin - which is present in our bodies and has a de cided influence on our brain. Drs. D. W. Woollcy and N. B. Campbell of the Rockefel ler Institute now point out that two substances, closely resembling serotonin, have re cently been isolated from a Mexican fungus. These drugs, too, have remarkable effects our brains. These studies make it ap pear all the more likely that serotonin, and perhaps some substances closely related to it, have something to do with the health and ill health of oour brains. All such studies give great hope because they supply hints which (he synthetic chemists use In devising new drugs - drugs which may lift person out of a depression. or may restore sanity to a per son who is "all mixed up" in a spell of schizophrenia - the commonest form of mental disease. Polypi In th Large Bowtl Many people want to know if polyps in the large bowel really do become malignant, and the answer Is Yes. They can become malignant, and hence it is always wise to have them removed surgical ly, or if they are low enough to be reached through a sig moidoscope (a lighted tube), they should be burned off with very hot sparks such as come from the end of a long wire. People ask. "But will more polyps come'.'" Yes, this is possible. I think thai the per son who has had one polyp is rather more likely to get another than is the man who never had one. But the new one may come only after many years. Anyone who has had an operation for cancer of the bowel should keep hav ing an x-ray examination every year to make sure that he is not getting another tumor. Cures For Psoriasit Of late many kind people have sent me what they said were "sure cures" for psoria sis, that more or less chronic skin disease of thousands of people. I appreciate the kind thoughts of my correspon dents, but I am not inclined to try their medicine because there is no sure cure that I ever heard of for psoriasis. In many cases, it tends to keep coming and going; and if it happens to clear up while the person is being treated with some medicine, this drug will get the credit. The only trouble is that if one uses the apparently curative drug on the skin of 20 or 30 people with psoriasis, or even if one uses It to try to clear up some red spots which came bnok on the skin of the original pa tient, one Is likely to get no result.
