Sheriffs Reserve To Attend Session

en at the regular meeting of
the Sheriff s Reserve at 8
o'clock tonight in the D'Anjou
building, 328 South Central
ave., according to Sheriff Paul
Bettiol.
Buford Johnson, reserve co
ordinator, said Detective Lee
Rice will give the instructions.
A few vacancies are still
available for membership in
the reserve division, Johnson
said. Persons must be from
21 to 45 years old, in good
physical condition, a Jackson
county resident, have no crim
inal record, of good moral
character, be willing to give
some time on a volunteer ba
sis to the work.
About 47 persons now be
long to the reserve, Johnson
said. The sheriff's office is
particularly interested in get
ting volunteers with a citi
zen's communication band ra
dio equipment. Ultimate aim
is to form a communications
division, he added.

they needed for their daugh
ter, Dorothy. The Cohens re
plied that the crib was too
small for Dorothy, who is now
19, or for her 14 -year -old
brother. The crib was lost in
shipment to Georgia when
Dorothy was 3 months old.

High school, was the 500,000th visitor to
the Jacksonville Museum Saturday, Sept. 8.

Contract Awarded
For Water Main
The Medford water com
mission awarded a contract
last week to James G. Robert
son tn install a water main
along Hillcrest dr., Foothills
rd. and Littrcll or.
Robertson's bid of $16,983
90 was the lowest among the
three bids submitted. The en-
ginner's estimate for the proj
ect was $19.927.75, -according
to Robert L. Lee, Medford
water superintendent.
The project will get under
way in about two weeks, Lee
estimated, r,nd is expected to
be completed in about three
months!
Four different sizes of wa
ter main will be used: 4, 6, 12,
and 16-inch pipe. The 12 and
16-inch mains will serve as
part of the eventual exten
sion of water service to the
eastern part of Medford, Lee
said.
Candidates Heard
At Fair Held
Sept. 8 at Grange

the Shady Cove Grange Can
didates' fair held Saturday,
Sept. 8. About 40 persons
heard the candidates present
their views.
Ted Phillips, of the Jackson
county Governor-for-Thornton
committee, represented At
torney General Robert Y.
Thornton at the meeting. Dur
ing the evening he attacked
Gov. Mark O. Hatfield's at
tempt to lease off-shore oil
lands to Shell Oil company
without competitive bidding.
Hatfield's appointment of a
handpicked committee to hear
charges of corruption in the
Oregon National Guard re
sulting in the loss of consid
erable property from Camp
Withycombe was also criti
cized. Through Phillips, Thornton
said that Hatfield has attempt
ed to whitewash the affairs
of his administration before
the people of Oregon. He com
mented that the special com
mittee techniques had also
been used to interfere with
the attorney general's investi
gation of the Liquor Control
commission in 1955.
Phillips concluded by com
menting, "If the governor will
not trust the people of this
state to deal with the facts,
I do not believe the people
of Oregon will trust control
of their government to him."
Charges Answered
Hugh Jennings, chairman of
the Jackson county Repub
lican central committee, who
represented Gov. Hatfield at
the Candidate's fair, answered
the accusations by stating tiiat
the governor "has taken de
cisive action in the best inter
ests of the people of Oregon."
He added that the decisions
of the governor have been
made only after a complete
examination of the facts and
consultation with responsible
authorities, regardless of
party affiliation.
Jennings stated that the
true facts about the off-shore
oil exploration reveal that the
bill was Introduced by two
leading Democrats in the
House of Representatives. It
was then referred to the com
mittee on natural resources,
where it received favorable
recommendation. "The Demo
cratically - controlled Senate
and House," Jennings said,
"passed the bill by a vote of
27 to two In the Senate and
49 to 10 in the House."
Over $2 million have been
spent In exploration by the
oil companies, he added, em
phasizing that Hatfield's ap
proval appeared to be in the
best interests of the people.
