WILLS CONTINUES TO SPARKLE AS DODGERS HOLD SLIM LEAD By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Speed whiz Maury Willi is doing almost 90 and at that rate he not only may catch Ty Cobb but also keep anyone from ever catching the Los Angeles Dodjers. Wills, with his foot to the floorboard, had a perfectly wonderful week end. He stole three more bases Sunday, increased his season total to 86, and rapped out three hits in a 5-3 victory over Pittsburgh that kept the Dodg ers a half-game ahead in the National league race. For some others though, It was a completely lost week end. Yanki Drop Two The stumbling New York Stanford Expecting Great Things From Dick Ragsdale This is another in a series of dispatches dealing with the prospects of 1962 West coast college football teams. By HAL WOOD UPI Sports Writer Stanford, Calif.-flJPD-For the first time since he came to Stanford five years ago, coach Jack Curtice isn't crying about lack of speed on the Indian football squad this fall. Instead, he's boasting about a big, powerful line that is quite mobile; and several backs who may turn the In dians into a team to be reck oned with. "Not that we're exception ally fast or anything like that," says Curtice. "But we'll be better all around this year." In his four campaigns at Stanford, Curtice has won only nine games while losing 31. Before he came to Indian country, Cactus Jack had won 84 and lost only 49. Obvious ly, he isn't proud of his Stan ford record. Big And Bright But Stanford has had scho lastic requirements that have kept many good men from being able to enter. The second-place Minnesota Twins muffed a golden oppor tunity by dropping a 10-9 de cision to the Detroit Tigers but they still climbed to with in 2 VSt games of the American league lead because of that double dose administered to the Yanks. And the third-place Los An geles Angels also blew a fine chance by losing to the Balti more Orioles, 4-3 In 14 In nings. The Angels are now four games out. To get back to Wills, though, he is only 10 shy of Cobb's modern major league line will average around 220 pounds to the man. Included are tackles Chuck Buehler (260), and Randy Vahn (218; guards Marv Harris (219). Wayne Pavlic, (226), and Randy Vahnn (218); center C. B. Great things are expected from Ragsdale, who is a natural leader and can do everything with fi nesse. Plenty of Halfbaks The halfbacks include let termen Gary Craig, Tyce Fitzmorris, Stan Lindskog, Gary Sargent, Danny Spcncc and Jim Shroyer which adds up to a lot of experience. Returning to the cquad is fullback Ed Cummings, voted last year as the "most valu able" player on the team. Be hind him are another pair of lettermen. Ken Babajian and Tony DeLillis, Buckeyes of Ohio State Should Spread-Eagle All Midwestern By ED SAINSBURY Chicago - IUPII - The college football slogan for 1902 could be Ohio State against the world, because the Buckeyes ought to spread engle their Midwestern opposition. Woody Hayes' 1081 team hod an 8-0-1 record, and this year's crew could be even better, despite loss of All American fullback Bob Fergu son, guard Mike Ingram and some good ends. Hayes lost only four men from his defensive unit and (wo from his offensive eleven. He's got reserves available tor all these positions plus some classy sophomores to chal lenge for starting berths. The Buckeyes last year lind a schedule break in that while en route to the Big Ten title, they did not play cither the No. 2 team, Minnesota, the No. 3 team, Michigan State, or the No. 4 team, Purdue This year, Ohio Slate does n't piny Minnesota. Dan Sieg Has Edge At Halfback Corvallis -IUPD- The Oregon State football Beavers con tinued their second week of fall practice sessions today. Coach Tommy Prolhro sent the Beavers through a single workout Sunday to start the second week of drills. Soohomore Dan Sieg of Mcdford appeared to have the edge as the team's storting right halfback ahead of vet eran Jim Sinyard and transfer Dick Jones. LOSES TWO PLAYERS Buffalo, N.Y.-diFB-The Buf falo Bills lost Monte Crockett with a broken nose and Carl Tascft with a hip injury while bowing to the Houston Oilers, 28-23, in their American Foot ball league season opener. Opposition have his hands full finding a quarterback to replace Sandy Stephens, his defense again could carry the Gophers to a good season. Indiana and Illinois both figure to Improve, but both seem doomed to the second division again. Hits Perfect Bunt Pinch hitter Billy Gardner's perfect squeeze bunt in the 16th inning scored Bob Till man with the run that gave the Red Sox their sweep over the Yanks. Fireballer Dick Radatz, who struck out nine and yielded only one run over the last nine innings, gained his eighth win. Giants Oppose Pittsburgh Bucs San Francisco - (UPI) - The San Francisco Giants, still trailing the Los Angeles Dodg ers by that half-game, squared off today against the Pitts burgh Pirates in the opener of a two-game joust. The Pirates have been beat en nine out of 12 times by the Giants this season. Felipe Alou, who now has hit safely in his last seven times at bat, drove in three runs Sunday with a double and his 24th home run to pace the Giants to their 5-4 squeaker past the ninth-place Chicago Cubs. Alou went four for four at the plate after collecting three hits in his last three appear ances on Saturday. In addi tion to his double and h" ner- both key blows - he cracked a brace of singles while the Giants bashed three Cub hurl ers for 10 hits. Alston Warns About Chicago Los Angeles-IUPD-There was little cause for undue opti mism In the camp of the Los Angeles Dodgers today after the club ran up a two-game "winning streak" against the Pittsburgh Pirates. But if the Dodgers had any Idea they might enjoy an eas ier time against the Chicago Cubs who invade Chavez Ra vine tonight, manager Walt Alston was right there with a warning that the Windy City club could be tough de spite its record. 'I hope our men realize they can't just throw their gloves on the field and beat the Cubs," Alston said. "They have some excellent men like Ernie Banks, George Altman, Ken Hubbs and the others who would like nothing bet ter than beating us." Dryidale to Start But the Dodgers will have their top pitcher, Don Drys dale, 23-7, starting against the Cubs. Opposing him will be Dick Ellsworth, 8-17, who was termed a better pitcher by the Dodgers than h s record might indicate. Drysdalc did not oppose the Pittsburgh Pirates. Green Bay extended its un beaten pre-season string to 19 games by beating the Wash ington Redskins, 20-14, at Co lumbus, Ga., Saturday night and thus completed a 6-0 ex hibition schedule. Cleveland wound up with a 5-0 record for its first un beaten exhibition season since 1951 a championship year for the Browns, incidentally.
