Successful Education Depends On State of Student's Health
By DAVID NYDICK
UPI Education Specialist
Successful education de
pends on health to a great de
gree end parents should rec
ognize that the school health
department is an important
link between home and
school.
The effect of a -hild's
health upon his school suc
cess emphasizes the valuable
services performed by this de
partment. Depending on school size,
the department generally con
lists of a school nurse, a con
sulting doctor and a consult
ing dentist. The nurse is the
coordinator of the services.
The purposes of the dc
partmcnt are three-fold. It
maintains knowledge of
school health laws. It mukci
recommendations regarding
the health needs of Individual
children as well as the to'n!
group. It act' as consultant
and teacher to supplement the
curriculum.
Docs your child have a
physical handicap or illness?
The nurse should be told of
your child's problems when
school starts. Do not neglect
to indicate any special needs.
Hiding information can be
dangerous. The proper nan
dling of an emergency is most
Important. The school has
charge of your child for a
large portion of the day. A
hemophiliac blood does not
clot, needs immediate attcn'
lion for a minor cut. A hear
ing problem may mean spe
cial seat placement in the
classroom.
The school can perform
only first aid duties. It can
not administer medicine or
diagnose illness. The aim of
the school health department
is preventive rather than cor
rective. The school nurse can
not be responsible for dis
pensing medicines. Other ar
rangement should be made
when necessary for the child
to take medication during the
day.
Should the student attend
school with a slight cold or
minor throat irritation? After
all, he has no fever and he
will not stay in bed. Many

parents are faced with this
problem. The answer is un
questionably no. Minor ail
ments are often signs of more
serious illnesses. Early care
may prevent complications.
You must also consider other
children and teachers. These
Illnesses may spread rapidly
in a classroom.
Conference Might Help
Are you disturbed about a
health problem? Do financial
difficulties interfere with
proper medical attention? A
conference with the nurse
may be your answer. She will
help you contact local med
ical service agencies without
embarrassment. Although the
health office does not treat
illness, it will help you ob
tain proper diagnosis and
therapy.
The school nurse is the cen
tral clearing house for all
emergencies and health prob
lems. She will keep teachers
informed of special needs.
She generally administers
first aid for accidents and
emergencies. He' knowledge
of a child's specific P'oblems
will help her make a proper
decision. The seriousness of
an accident or illness is of
ten complicated by the lack
of information about medical
history. The more you indi
cate to her in advance, the
better she will be able to pre
vent dangerous events.
