And I've come across even longer ones, like Katzcncllcnbogen or Llewei- lynberry. Unrnn 1. mSlkinS S mislaKC In shedding his name he'll be shedding his identity and turn into a zero. Hercules I.-Oh, I stand out in people's minds all right Thnv rpmember me as you wilh-lhe-big-name. But they can't send me an order that way, or write out a check. Dad doesn't understand that m.. uinrk s a sales manager Involves meeting dozens of people a day over a wide territory. 1 can l asK tor time out to explain the pronuncia tion, spelling, origin and, above all, tricks to remem bering my name! It's a real jaw-breaker. Why make things so hard? I'm not forsaking my fam ily, nor am I disgracing the name. All I'm doing is dropping two syllables. This way my name won't be a dis traction, getting between me and the business at hand. The Council: Correction, Mr. I. This isn't the land of just Smith and Jones. It's the country of the four-syllable I.'s and nil the diverse names that make our roll call an International miracle! There ar sound reasons for changing a name, of course. The courts accept requests based upon business, profes sional, social and even psy chological considerations. So long as the motive is honest, people may alter their own labels. Discounting sentiment, we must accept Hercule's de cision. But lest too many of the colorful, musical, individual istic and meaningful surnames like Mr. I.'s vanish, a plea herewith to slow the march toward a pale conformity which would homogenize an cestral names. Recently the newspapers carried word of a valuable scientific contribu tion made by two professors from the University ot Chi cago. Somehow their names made the report even more Interesting. These were: Dr. William Offenkrantz and Dr. Allen Rechtschnffcr. At the same time, as stated, we appreciate Hercule's diffi culties. The switchboard op erator in a certain office knows, whenever a caller has trouble pronouncing a name, that no matter what it sounds like it's Mr. Szczybaniuk who's being paged! People with "muscular" names often reach a point where they re spond to a fair approximation, Klving up hope of being ad dressed accurately. So, Mr. I., Hercules by any other name will still be your Hercules. And if he turns into the wnrld-heater he hopes to be, the entry will still be in the credit column of the I family. He'll sec to that. But whenever possible we urge the perpetuation of au thentic family names as a his toric link between past and future. Substituting their own names, millions of Americans can chime in with Harrigan and sing: "It's a name that a shame never has been con nected with - Harrigan, that's me!" 4-H Club Horse Show Set Sunday The F.aglc Point Desert Pegasus 4-H Horse club will hold its sixth annual fall Horse show at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. ft. at the White City Domiciliary. Ribbons will be given to five places and trophies to the high point rider in each age group - 9 to 12: 13 to 18. and adults.
