OREGON SHAW, STAGEY, BUTLER SOUTHERN OREGON GOLF CHAMPIONS Titles Won In RVCCs Tournament Tom Shaw, long, hard hit ter from Portland's Columbia Edftewater links, triumphed in the "battle of the Milwau kie Mustangs" yesterday and is the Southern Oregon men's asiateur golf champ for 1962. Shaw, a University of Ore gon collegian, thumped his former Milwaukie high school teammate, Robert C. Smith, tort Ord, Calif., in the finals of the Labor day holidays' tournament at Medford's Rogue Valley Country club. Carding six under par for 31 holes, Shaw won by 6 and S. Members of the host cIud claimed the other champion ships. Miss Pam Stacey, Med ford, senior to be at U. of O. is the newly crowned ladies' titlist. Southern Oregon col lege professor Larry Butler garnered the senior men's mantle for the second time. Miss Stacey put in a short heart-stopper putt on No. 36 to halve the hole and nudge former champ Mrs. Helen Da vies, Medford, 1 up in the women's final match. Butler, senior victor in I960, fought by Kurl Bennett, Grants Pass, another past champion, 2 and 1 with even par in the older men's finale. 18-Footer Cancels 40 , Shaw dunked an 18-foot putt on the 31st hole to put away his joust. The winning shot, for a birdie three, came just after Smith, fighting des perately to keep the match alive had chipped In spectac ularly from 40 feet away to par. Eagle on 25th Pam's putter went sour on five straight greens right after lunch. Then, on No. 7 green, the 25th hole of the match, she holed a 14-footcr for an eagle three. That got her going and she was never down again. At the 27 mark she had a 2 up gap. Better putting and driving helped Pam in the morning. Helen had a reported approaching cdtfe, but in the afternoon her pitching was not what it was in the morning. Helen was two over par in the morning and two over in the afternoon. Butler was one under par on the front side of his match and one over on the back while Bennett was par on the first nine and tour over on the bnck. After seven holes Bennett, Caveman bowl oper ator who was champ in 19S9, had Butler 1 down with each man one under par. The little "perfessor even ed with a par on No. 9 and Bennett took the lead for the last time willi a par on 10 Butler squared with standard strokes on 12. Win First Flights The Grants Pass man won the first two holes of the titf with birds. Butler won No. 4 with a birdie to Bennett's bogey and evened with a par on six. Bennett nabbed seven with a bird. First flight winners in the tourney were Bill McAllister, Salem (cx-Medford high), 1 up over Mat Palar'o Jr., San Rafael, Calif., in ihe men's division, Ray Isaacs, Colum bia r'.dgi'wak'r, 2 uo over Mar vin Clark, Grants Pass, in the senior and Miss June Robin son, Albany, 1!I(1 champ, 1 Smith muffed a three-foot. The stroke penalty on Smith because of the irrigation ditch was on the 23rd. Even then Smith came close to chipping into the hole. Score was 4 up. On 25 Shaw was ov er t h e green on his second shot. The soldier conceded his Marine Reserve foe a three foot putt for a bird. It was 5 up for Shaw with a gi'me bird on No. 28. Smith ap proached short, chipped by the cup and missed it coming back. Smith cut the difference with an 18-foot bird putt on 29. Shaw countered with an 11-foot par putt on 30 for five up again. On 31 Smith was in the rough. His second shot was short of the green while Shaw was on the carpet on two. The soldier chipped over the green and came back with the birdie putt and play did not go the scheduled 36 holes. In the morning Shaw open ed up with birds for wins on Nos. 1 and 2. Smith took No. 4 with a par and No. 5 with a 16-inch gi'me bird. Shaw claimed 1 up again with a par on No. 8 when a 18-incher would not go down for Smith. On No. 0 for 2 up Shaw drew a conceded par. Smith had pitched from the right of the green into the trap. On 10 Bob won when he put his ap proach 2'2 feet from the pin then sank the putt for a bird. 10-Footor Down Smith's sand trap and chip ping trouble enabled Tom to go back 2 up on 12 with a par. Shaw canned a 10-foot putt. Par look it again on No. 13 for a 3-up Shaw count when a 2'j-footer refused to go in for the Fort Ord player. On 18 Shaw chipped up to one foot from the hole and received a conceded bird. Shaw's second shot was to the right of the green. His chip hit a limb and the ball dropped on the apron. Then Shaw's putt ran way by the hole. After Miss Stacey's chip for the eagle she won the 26th and 27th holes with pars. The ladies traded shots on an even basis for the next. Helen cut her deficit to 1 up with a par on 33. The two halved on 34. Each chipped up nicely but two-putted as Helen missed on an eight and Pam on a four-foot try. The rivals also two-putted on 35 as a seven footer for Pam and a five footer for Helen did not drop. When Miss Stacey was lin g up her putt from the pron on 36, she asked, "Are ou going to sink yours, Hcl- Mrs. Davies, four feet rom the hole, said she was. But, after Pam putted two feet by the cup, it did not work out that way. Davies Catches Mrs. Davies cut her adver sary's tunchtime gap with a par and bird on the first two holes in the afternoon. She also took No. 22 with a bird to catch up. A par won No. 24 for the former champ to put her one up. . In the morning Miss Stacey won on Nos. 2 and 3 with a bird and a par. Helen birdied to win No. 7 but Pam got No. 8 with a par. The match went to 3 up with Pam'i bird on No. 12. En route to his champion ship Shaw defeated Dennis McManus, Eureka, Calif., 6 and 5, Don Krieger, Columbia Edgewater, 4 and 3, Dodd Fisher, Eugene, 4 and 3, Har vey Woods, Ashland, 1 up, and Dr. Robert Buck, Medford, 3 and 2. Butler won from Bayard Getchell, Medford, 2 and 1, Andy Toyly, Red Bluff, Calif., 5 and 4, and from Carl Schmidt, last year's senior champ, 1 up. Miss Stacey turned back Mrs. Grace Reymers, Ashland, 4 and 3, Miss Pat Dwyer, Wa verley Portland, 7 and 6 and Mrs. Shirley Mitchell, Chico, Calif., 4 and 2. The tournament was the 34th annual one here and the biggest ever with 431 entrants. The races start at 11 a.m. standard time with heats in each class. The classes con sist of the 250cc. class, 500cc. class and the open class. The number of heats and mains will be determined by the number of entries. The top third of the heats will compete for top honors in the championship races in each class, and the rest will go in the C and B mains. The winner of the C main will then compete in the B main and the winner of the B will Women's Golf Rogue Valley Women golf ers helped play host to the Southern Oregon Golf tourna ment and there was no regu lar days play last week. After the championship races the first four place win ners in each class will com pete in a sweepstakes race with the 500cc. and open class being handicapped. The heats will be five laps each, the C main will be seven laps, B main 10 laps, state champion ship 15" laps and the sweep stakes 12 laps. There will also be a special championship race for the 55cc. and under class. These races will be run just like the race for the larger bikes with the exception that there will only one main and no sweepstakes race. The heats will consist of four laps and the top half of the heats will compete in the champion ship race and the rest in the B main. The B main will be seven laps and the winner will then compete in the championship race, which will be 10 laps. The number of laps in each race will be subject to change. The race will be held on a slightly over mile dirt TT scrambles course. There will be riders from all parts of Oregon and nearby to compete for the many trophies, total ing to approximately SI, 000, to be given to the riders. There will be two pretty local girls, Juna Mills and Jan McAllister, to present the tro phies to the riders. The spec tators will view all the thrills and excitement from a cover ed grandstand. The Oregon State Cham pionship race will be sanc tioned by the American Motor cycle association. Competition Close at Kartway Races Races at Medford Kattways Sunday were well attended. The elapsed time rules wera used, making -ompetition in all classes very close, organi zation officials reported. First and seconu place trophies were awarded in each class. Trophy races will again ba held Sept. 16. Several Medford Karij members visit d the new track at Happy Camp, Calif., yesterday, where there was a large turnout of karts and spectators. Gene Maidment and Ells worth Jones of Portland and Won Clark of The Dalles tied for second place with 145s. Gary Bronkey of The Dalles was fifth at 147 and Al Rem linger of Hood River finished sixth at 148.
