only 18 months old and a
sheer delight. But as he begins
to get around and take notice,
we expect him to assert him
self, say no, do the usual con
trary things little boys do.
Jim says the only way to train
him is with quick slaps. I just
could never get myselt to use
brute (orce on the little fel
low. The tunny part o( Jim's po
sition is that he himself was
never spanked as a child, but
he feels now that his parents
cheated him out of logical,
consistent discipline. My own
parents didn't use physical
punishment either, but we did
what we were supposed to out
of love and respect for them.
That's how I d like to train
Barry, but Jim says it's no
good.

kids and the kids know it.
When that's the case, yelling
won't hurl, beatings won't
matter, and even 'iaissrz
faire" neglect won t warp the
children noticeably. Correc
tion is a natural, honest, un
derstandable sequel of misbe
havior. But in a loveless
home, the most studied "fair
ness," the most psychological
ly valid approach, won't kccD
a child from feeling abused
and mistreated.

smack him merely because

provided it really jazzes him
up to recognize the right
groove, you may really do him
some good-as when, say, he
tears up the other kid's kite
Actually there are many
specific ways to discipline a
young child, each aimed at
teaching him something spe
cific. The infliction of physical
pain is best reserved for vital
moments of real danger
Georgette objects to the use of
brute force, but she forgets
that an onrushing truck uses
it. The sooner Barry learns
that there is a time to obey
and a time for restraint, the
bettcrand the safer. Most of
the time. Georgette and Jim
will be able to guide Barry by
their tone of voice and clear
instructions, by making him
aware of natural conse
quences. Dawdling, for exam
ple, makes it too late to go
to the park to play, and so on.
We agree with Jim on the
cruelty of the silent treatment
as a punishment. Phyllis Mc
Ginley describes this in "A
Choice of Weapons," and it ap
plies to parents and children.

parents' love for him will, in
turn, direct them.
