yesterday to pace a 48-man
contingent in senior men's
qualifying. Mrs. Shirley
Mitchell, Chico, Calif.,
claimed women's medalist
prize when the 84 she record
ed Tuesday withstood the
challenge of the Wednesday
rounds.
Today marked the first of
five days o matches in this
Labor Day holiday classic.
Finals in all three divisions
will be contested next Mon
day. Five With 72
Kreiger and kinkade edged
five other men's division
qualifiers by a single stroke.

crown in 1957 and again in
1958.
Butler's first round rival

ford. Mrs. Mitchell opposed Mrs.
Freda Peters, Mcdford, and
Miss Stncey's first foe was
Mrs. Grace Reymcrs, Ash
land and Rogue Valley. Miss
June Robinson, Albany, who
took the ladies top trophy
last year, claimed her seeded
place like the other 1961 vic
tors. Today she met Mrs.
Helen Davies, Mcdford, who
won the championship on
seven straight occasions.

senior men's qualifying were
Earle Voorhies, Grants Pass.
Mahr Reymcrs, Ashland and
Rogue Valley, and Charles
Bennett, Monrovia, Calif.,
with 79s. Mrs. Richard Finch,
Medford, and Mrs. Kathryn
Wright, Columbia-Edgewater,
had 86s in women's quali
fying. Krieger had a 37 front side
and 34 back nine in his 18
holc trip. Steady par golf
was interruped by a bogey on
nine through the 15 hole.
Krieger had birds on 16 and
17. The front nine was Kin
kade's best. He had four birds
and two bogies for a 34. Com
ing back he bogied 10 and
birdied 13. He has two under
par coming into the 18th
green. There Kinkade three-
putted and took a bogey.
Playoffs for the men's and
senior men's medalist prizes
reportedly are yet to be
arranged.
Pairings made up last night
showed 271 in regular men's
flights, 112 in women s and
48 in seniors for a total field
of 431.
Some Flights Rest
There will be matches
every day in men's champion
ship and first flights with two
matches, the quarterfinals
and semi-finals on Sunday.
All other flights in all divi
sions will have four matches,
drawing a day off for rest
along the way.
Women's fourth and sixth
flights and men's second,
third and fourth did not Dlav
today. Ladies' championship
and second flights and the
senior players skip Friday.

non-competitive women's
course record at Rogue Valley
Country club.
Miss Robinson, who took
her seeded No. 2 spot in the
women's championship flight
and waived the opportunity to
try for medalist, was One over
par with a 39 on the front side
and two under with a 35 on
the in nine.
The former non-competitive
mark of 75 was held by Miss
Robinson. She also holds the
competitive standard of 76 set
last when she was medalist for
Southern Oregon. Her prac
tice score was 10 strokes un
der the medalist count for the
1962 tourney.
The Albany links lady
chalked up birdies on six
greens, the ninth, 11th, 12th,
15th, 16th and 17th. She had
three bogies and double
bogied par three fourth hole.

"It looks like a building
year," reported McKibbin.
But, he added that some of
his sophomores "are real good
boys, and you never can tell."
The coach indicated that
the Crusaders may be using

five on defense and
four or five in the multiple T
offense.
Turnout at 9 a.m. and 5
p.m. workouts has been aver
aging around 30 boys. Heavy
concentration has been on

The little word caused two
heated discussions Wednesday
night that saw four players 1
ejected in the Cincinnati-Los
Angeles game, which the
Dodgers won, 2-1, on John
Roseboro's bases-loaded single
in the bottom of the 13th in
ning. Dodgers manager Walt Al
ston, who has a reputation as
one of baseball' quieter souls. ;
was ejected during the sixth
inning when he demanded a
balk be called on Cincinnati
pitcher Joey Jay. Dodger
pitcher Johnny Podrej was
tossed out several minutes
later for continuing the argil-,
ment from the dugout.
Then Cincinnati pilot Fred
Hutchinson and half the team
raced to encircle umpire Ken
ny Burkhart after the latter
enforced the balk rule on Jay
in the lith inning. Batting
helmets and towels came fly
ing out of the Reds dugout.
Rut they were heaved in as
Hutchinson and coach Pete
Whisenant were heaved out.
"That was the most delib
erate violation o( t lie rule I've
ever seen," said Alston after
the hectic game. "The only
thing I'm asking is (or some
thing that ? in the book. And
I'm asking the umpires to en
torce it "
