tle and back, it attracts some
attention.
Gordon E. Young, who is
.sales representative for a
printing firm, passed through
Medford this week o his
way home, Thousand Oaks,
Calif. The ;t8-yearold man
left on his vacation July 30
and arrived in Seattle, via
Reno, Nev., and eastern Ore
gon, Aug. 111. lie spent a
week at the fair and e ,)ects
to arrive home about Sept. 6.
Young, who thinks il is un
usual for a man his size to
lake such a trip on a hike,
has averaged between HO and i
100 miles a day on the 2,700
mile round-trip jaunt, lie said
he rules from 9 a.m. to about
S p.m.. then slops for the day. 1
He eats at restaurants and
sleeps in a sleeping bag he
carries with him.

bicycle to Seattle after hear
ing about others doing the
same thing. He has had only
one minor accident, when a
car ran him off the road. Oth
erwise, he said, he ha i enjoy
ed the trip and noted t ho nu
merous rest areas provided in
Oregon.

From an Operation
Years ago, at the Mayo
Clinic, I saw a woman of 50
or so who had in the rectum
a large, flat,
s u p e r ficial
cancer of a
peculiar type.
It seemed to
me to be
grow ing on
top of the the
original inner
lining of the
bowel, and it
did not seem
fij.K it 1 bowel, and it
to penetrate deeply. I said to
her, If this is removed suni
cally you will have to have an
artificial means of elimination
in which the colon will open
out into the abdominal wall.
It is bearable, but a most un
pleasant thing to have.
"I am sure that our very
able rectal specialists could
burn this cancer off with elec
tric sparks. It is conceivable
that in some spots, the growth
might then come back, but
such new spots could be
burned off. Eventually, I
think you would be rid of the
entire growth. There are some
risks, but 1 know that if I
were in your position, I would
prefer to take the chance.'
She said, "Yes; I certainly
do want to lake the chance."
Fortunately, Dr. Raymond
Jackman in the rectal depart
ment agreed with me that the
case was an ideal one for
treatment with dedicating
sparks, and he quickly burned
off the cancer. As I remember,
there were a few litlle places
in which tumor cells reap
peared during the next year
or two, but each time they
were (tuickly burned off, and
after that for many years the
woman went without any
trouble. She used to conic
back every year for a check
up.
Interesting Article
Recently, D r. Jackman
wrote a most interesting ar
ticle on this type of handling
of certain slow-growing can
cers of the rectum. After
treating 211 people in this
way, he is satisfied that the
method is a good one. His
study takes in a period of HI
years, from January, 1943,
through December, 11)52. He
described what happened to
those patients whom he per
sonally saw and treated. Some
of the lesions were as large
as the palms of a man's hand.
In 153 of the cases the only
treatment given was the 'ful-
guration" with sparks; 42 per
sons had, in addition, some ra
dium; and 16 eventually had
to have a surgical excision
of the tumor.
There were right failures,
and in three of these the pa
tient then was cured witli an
operation. The point that 1
think should be remembered
is that if the 211 patients had
all been operated on, some
would have died because of
the operation, and some
would have had a recurrence.
In some cases, factors such
as old age. overweight, dread
of an artificial anus, or per
haps the presence of a bad
heart influenced the doctors
in their choice of the simpler
method of treatment.

strongly in favor of the idea
of treating these people con
servatively, and I honor Dr.
Jackman greatly for his cour
age in doing what he has
done.

Nowadays, if the patient is
a man who has had a heart
attack, he may be taking a
drug which interferes with
the coagulation of his blood.
Some persons always have a
slight tendency to bleed and
many get nose bleeds because
they love to pick the nose.
This is probably the common
est cause. Often when the
nose specialist looks in, he
sees a little ulcer where the
person often has picked his
nose. Sometimes, blowing the

bleed.
I recently read an article
by Dr. Leonard Girsch, a pe
diatic allergist at Temple Uni
versity in Philadelphia. He
says that many nose bleeds in
children arc due to allergy,
due perhaps to inhaling some
dust or animal hair, or the
pollens that come during the
hay fever season, or possibly
they are due to eating some
food such as chocolate. The
mother can keep a record of
unusual foods eaten just be
fore the child has had a bad
nose bleed. Then, after sev
eral spells, she may find that
always before a bleeding, the
child ate some one particular
food.
In cases of older people, the
person might have a high
blood pressure, or any one of
several diseases.

weight is bad for one's health.
