ence I had
with the auto
ma t e d infor
mation ser
Labor Depart
ment inaugurated this week
on an experimental basis.
The department's venture
into futuristic press agentry
employs a recording device
that is hooked up to a lele
phone. By dialing l(il.')3R8. a re

I first dialed the number al
12:42 p.m. on the day that the
robot in the grey flanncd suit
went Into operation.
All I heard was a terici
of clicking noises, followed
by the telephonic equiva
lent of the Bronx cheer. I

sounded more raucous than
usual.
The same thing happened
the next two times I dialed 1
naturally assumed that some
thing pretty big must be going
on to keep the line tied up
like that.
Finally, on the fourth try,
the dulcet tones of Ue.ss Fried
man, who had been assigned
to give voice to the robot,

old fashion human variety.
Moreover, the robot variety
has what I regard as a basic
deficiency rendering it inca
pable of perform in; one of
the fundamental functions of
press ailenlry.
