Radio Engineers
Install New FM
System in Area
Salem-Slate forestry depart
ment radio engineers recently
completed installation of new
FM radio systems in two dis
tricts and added 12 new mo
bile radios to an existing sys
tem, State Forester Dwighl
Phipps lias announced.
Motorola Inc. of Chicago,
provided the equipment un
der a $113,000 contract, he
said.
This was done, he said, to
modernize the two systems
and to meet the new technical
standards set by the Federal
Communications commission.
The entire siate network must
be converted from AM to FM
by lf)64, the commission has
decreed.
At present, the conversion
is approximately three-fourths
completed, Phipps said. The
swingovcr began in 1053.
New equipment for the net
works, located in the South
west Oregon and Klamaih
Foresl Protection districts,
consists of four 60-watt base
stations, two mobile relay sta
tions, 80 mobile radios, 06
"Handie-Talkic" portable ra
diophones and one aircraft
unit. The other 12 mobiles
went into Northwest Oregon
district's existing system.
Ovtr Enlirt District
The systems provide com
munications with fire fight
ers, district supervisors and
maintenance men within each
district. In addition, by the
use of mobile relay stations,
mobilet-to-mobilc and porta
ble to - portable communica
tions are extended over vir
tually the entire operating
district.
Equipment for the South
west District network in
cludes two base stations to be
installed in Mcdford and
Grants Pass, one mobile relay
station on King Mountain
north of Grants Pass, 41 mo
bile radios and til portable
units, in operation, the mobile
relay will provide district
wide coverage between tbe
base stations and the mobile
and portable units in the field.
In a similar manner, a re
lay station on Hogback moun
tain in Ihe Klamath district
will receive and transmit me
saces between the two base
stations at Klamath Falls and
Klamath agency and 30 new
mobile radios and 35 portable
units in the field.

Smoking and Health
In Ihe New England Jour
nal of Medicine for April 26,
1962, is a note from London
on the recent report of the
Royal College of Physicians
on Smoking and Health. This
official report confirms the
facts that lung cancer and
chronic bronchitis attack
smokers more often than non-
smokers; that cigarette smok
ers run the greatest risk, and
that the risk increases with
the number of cigarettes
smoked each day.
It has been shown that fatal
coronary artery disease is
more frequent in smokers
than in non-smokers; also,
that heavy smoking can hin
der the healing of a stomach
ulcer. Cancers of the mouth
and the throat are seen more
commonly in smokers than
in non-smokers.
The chance of dying in the
next 10 years for a man who
is a heavy cigarette smoker
is estimated as one in 23; as
compared with the risk for a
non-smoker of one in 90. Sta
tistics indicate that only 15
per cent of non-smoking men
aged 35 will die before they
are 65. but 33 per cent of
heavy smokers are likely to
die before they are 65! Inter
estingly, in England, many
doctors have already become
scared enough to change their
smoking habits.
