Billionth Visitors
A 7
Tlie Amit family of Los An
geles, Calif., Wednesday were
among the billionth visitors to
the national park system as
they entered Crater Lake Na
tional Park through the An
nie Spring entrance.
Mr. Amit was selected si
multaneously with visitors in
191 other National Park Serv
ice areas to symbolize the bil
lionth visit. Selection of the
Wednesday visitor was based
on the precise tt ne . en
t'ance, witch wu? 11:31 am.
Acting Park Superinten
dent Neal G. Guse explained
it is virtually impossible to
determine exactly which vis
itor to the National Park
system was actually the bil
lionth. However, statistical
data by the service permit
ted the rangers to draw a rea
sonable conclusion that the
billionth visitor would enter
one of the parks on that day.
Into Sharpar Focus
"Observance of billionth
visitor day brings into sharp
er focus the importance of na
tional parks to all people,"
Guse explained.
"It serves to emphasize the
continuing need for protect
ing these areas for the use
and enjoyment by the people
now and by future genera
tions as well," he noted. ..
."While it has taken some
58 years for national parks
to record one billion visits,
it is estimated the second bil
lion will be in 11 years by
1973 and by 1981. another
eight years, we may record
our third billion," he said.
As guests of Guse and the
Crater Lake Lodge company, i
the Amits. with their two j
daughters Liat, nine years,
and Dalit, six, and a friend, 1
Ehud Yonay, also of Los An-1
geles, were taken on a per- j
sonally - conducted park tour, j
They were entertained with
a lunch at Crater Lake lodge.
A certificate was presented
Amit naming him as among
the billionth visitor group.
