Mental Attitude Biggest
Problem of Card Team
(This ii another in a
series on the pre - season
prospects of professional
football teams for the 1962
season.)
By ED SAINSBURY
Lake Forest, 111. -"JPD-
Rookie coach Wally Lemm be
lieves his St. Louis Cardinals
have the ability to win the
National Football league's
Eastern division title, but he
expects difficulty convincing
his players of that.
"Our biggest problem," he
said, "is mental attitude. I
think that's been one of the
biggest Cardinal problems for
years. It's 90 per cent of pro
football, and it's the thing we
have to beat."
Lemm this year fulfilled an
ambition he never expected to
achieve, becoming Cardinals
head coach after he had re
tired from football because he
was "in a rut "
He came out of retirement
to take over the Houston Oil
ers in mid-season last year and
after he coached them to the
American league title, he quit
to switch jobs with Frank
(Popl Ivy of the Cardinals.
"We have the material to
win the championship," he
said. "If we get a few breaks
and don't make too many mis
takes we can do it."
In Fine Shape
Injuries and military scr
vice riddled the Cards last
year with Ernie McMillan and

Draw Gear
"We're going to blow the
whistle at 10 a.m."
So reported Fred Spiegel
berg, head coach of the Med
ford high football team.
That whistle on Monday
will signal the start of drills
for the 1962 season.
Spiegelberg and his aides
will have quantity. Time will
tell about the quality.
The head man reported that
gear has been issued to 110
aspirants, including some 20
lettermen. Coaches counted 30
seniors, 30 juniors and 50
sophomores, approximately.
Miles With Ducks
Spiegelberg said that the
presence of letterman quarter
back Dan Miles at the early
drills is an uncertainty. He is
playing baseball with the Eu
gene Ducks. The Eugene cluo
is now taking part in the
American Amateur Baseball
congress tourney at Portland.
A second Medford drill on
Monday will be conducted at
4 p.m.
Spiegelberg said that drills
after the first day could be
shifted to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Medford opens its football
season Sept. 14 at The Dalles.
The Black Tornado will play
Marshfield at Medford on
Sept. 21.
Madison Loses
To Trenton Team
Bridgeton, N.J. -IUM- Tren
ton, N.J., captured the Na
tional Babe Ruth Baseball
championship with a 7-6 vic
tory over Madison of Portland
Saturday.
The New Jersey team went
through the double-elimination
tournament without a
loss. Trenton defeated the
Portlanders 4-1 Thursday
night.
Madison rallied for four
runs the final seventh inning.
Trenton scored five limes in
the third. John Shafer col
lected three hits and drove in
three runs for the losers.
It was Trenton's second na
tional Babe Ruth title.
first season in the NFL after
a Canadian career, was so
badly hurt he was hampered
in every game.
This year, all are back, and
Lemm said "it makes a big
difference. I can tell from the
pictures."
The Cardinals could have
good running with Crow,
Childress, and Prentice Gautt
are at the inside halfback,
Bobby Joe Conrad as flanker
back, and Mai Hammack and
Frank Mestvik at fullback.
Pass receivers are excellent
with Sonny Randle, Taz An
derson and Mclnnis experi
enced and speedy.
Line Is Good
The line on both offense
and defense is fairly fast, fair
ly big and experienced. Lemm
believes his offensive guards,
Mike McGce and Ken Gray,
are as good a pair as there is
in the league, and both Mc
Millan and Ed Cook rate as
solid tackles. Bob DcMarco,
switched from guard, has tak
en over the center job.
The defensive line also is
solid with Frank Fuller, Joe
Robb, Ed Hcnke and Don
Owens up front, and Bill Ro
man, Dale Meincrt and Ted
Bates in linebacking spots.
The defensive backfield,
Lemm said, is "good," and "if
there's a better safely man
than Larry Wilson, I'd like
to see him."

The relative of Mack's is
Don McGillicuddy, an out

but has made comparatively
few appearances in the lineup.
McGillicuddy came to the
Ems from Springfield ot the

The selection committee
had until Sept. 8 to choose
between Weatherly and Nefer
titi, but Weatherly was so im
pressive in the first three
races of the final trials that
the committee decided to wait
no longer.
The cup races between
Weatherly and Gretel will be
gin off Newport Sept. 15.
Weatherly won Saturday's
test against Nefertiti by a mar
gin of five minutes and 29
seconds. i
Once again light air. was
Nefertiti's undoing, this time
southwest winds of 8 to 12
knots.
With 34-year-old sailmakcr
designer Ted Hood at the til
ler, the queen edged into a
small lead at the start of the
24-mile, twice-around, wind
ward-leeward course, but she
retained the lead only briefly.
The blue-hulled Weatherly
began slowly to creep away
from Nefertiti, gliding by her
just before she reached the
first mark to post a margin of
1 minute, 54 seconds.
Adds 14 Seconds
Weatherly added 14 seconds
on the second leg to chalk up
a 2-minute, 8-sccond advan
tage at the halfway point. At
the third turn, Weatherly had
piled it on to lead by 3 min
utes, 51 seconds.
With the race all but won,
Weatherly then proceeded to
outdo Nefertiti on a broad
reach to the finish line to
post the 5-minute, 29-second
margin.
