Florence J. - I see no good
reason why he can't set a
wedding date.
Abner R. - I don't want to
count on her earnings. I don't
want debts.
Florence J. - Ever since I
was 19 and a trusting college
girl, Abner has been telling
me how much he loves me and
that some day we'll surely be
announcing our engagement.
I'm 22 now, just out of col
lege, and the proud possessor
of a teaching license, but not
an engagement ring. Abner
has presented meiwith every
thing else but. It isn't money,
I'm sure, judging from the
lavish way he entertains me.
He's 27 and supposedly (at
least the way he tells it) a big
success in business.
I certainly do love him. too,
but the way to rub him the
wrong way is to mention mar
riage. "Not until I can buy us
a house free and clear," he
says. He wants to save up a
q at cash first, to avoid
loans and mortgages. It seems
tiisi father lost their home
when a mortgage was called
in, and Abner has an obsession
about a cash reserve. Since
I'd continue working after
marriage and could help to
wards this goal, I can't under
stand what's really holding
things up.
Abner R. - "Once bitten.
twice careful," they say, and
I m being careful that my
family will never have to gn
through what I went through
when we were evicted from
our home because my dad
couldn't pay off our mort-
gage.
1 love Flo and I thought
she was satisfied with my
long-range plan to save up for
the cash purchase of a home
before I get married. In order
no( to make the waiting too
hard for her, I've been taking
her out to nice restaurants
and Broadway shows, and
I've given her some expensive
presents. Certainly she knows
I'm sincere.
What's the terrible hurry?
She's only 22. She can wait
until I can offer her a secure
roof over her head. Her prom
ise to help out is sweet, but
I ve seen that arrangement
cave In when the bride be
comes pregnant. She can't
work, the debts pile up and
trouble's at the door. No. I'm
drawing closer to mv goal and
I have my eye on a home. Flo
wil be glad she waited.

The Council: Alone with
Florence we'll chime in and
wonder what Abner's real rea
son Is for not being formally
engaged to her and preparing
to be married.
Granted his childhood ex
perience with a home-finance
debacle was traumatic, he
must know that taking a mort
gage on a home is no disgrace,
that it Is the usual procedure.
and that It is even the prefer
red procedure for wealthy
purcnasera wno have the re
quired cash on tap. Real estate
and tax people Inform us Shat
there are some desirable as
pects to mortgaging one's
home. It need not be a tiger
on Abner's back, as he fears.
So we ask why this man.
who Insists he loves s girl and
can afford to support her,
should set so mountainous an
obstacle In the path toward
marriage? Is there more to
this problem than meets the
eye? Is Abner's source of in
come suspect, derived from
shady dealings? Above all,
why does he dissipate the
hoard ' by buying Florence
expensive gifts and squander
ing large sums on dates with
her? Every $1,000 counts, you
know.
Our advice to Florence is
to humor Abner a while long
er, agreeing to wait until he
has that wad-on-the-line under
three conditions: First, that a
reasonable time-limit be set:
second, that Abner's sights be
lowered to settle for less than
mansion, something modest:
and third, that the House Fund
have priority over all his ex
penditures, with no side
tracks to race tracks or Carib
bean cruises.
But after that "reasonable"
period, Florence may well be
gin dating other men. Who
knows but that there's a vine
covered cottage In her future
with a mortgage, and with
someone else.
