25-Year Service

William J. Cleary is only 38
years old, but if he felt like
it he could retire right now
with 25 years of military serv
ice behind him.
Twenty-five years? That's
right. Cleary, non-commissioned
officer in charge of the
Eielson Air Force base secur
ity and law enforcement sec
tion, was only 13 years old
when he enlisted in the Six
teenth U.S. Cavalry at Ft.
Brown, Texas, back in 1937.
To get past the recruiters
then, Cleary had stuffed him
self on bananas and water to
hit the 100-pound minimum
weight and stood on his tip
toes to make the 5 feet 5 inch
es limit.
It wasn't until 12 years lat
er, after cavalry duty on the
Mexican border and partici
pating in World War II com
bat in Europe, that Cleary re
vealed the truth to slightly
incredulous Air Force offi
cials. The occasion was
Cleary's decision to switch
from the Army to the Air
Force when the latter became
a separate service.
Though not condoning 13-year-old
enlistees, the Air
Force took Cleary's combat
and service record into consid
eration and allowed him to
continue his career with a
clean slate.
Youngest of Rank
He now lays claim to the
distinction of being the young
est senior master sergeant in
fTie Air Force with the most
time in service.
Cleary said his first duty in
the cavalry was as a bugler
and he vividly recalls the rou
tine of horseback drill every
morning followed by fatigue
details and weapons training
in the afternoon. Nine months
of the year were spent on
maneuvers.
For all this, he drew $18.75
monthly pay and 10 cents a
day clothing allowance as a
private.
"One redeeming feature of
my youth," Cleary recalls
with a smile, "was that I
could go to the movies in town
wearing civilian clothes and
buy a child's ticket while my
buddies had to pay the serv
iceman's special price of 25
cents."
Cleary's assignments in the
service since his bugling days
have run the gamut from
blacksmith to clerk, interpret
er, motorcycle mechanic, mess
sergeant, investigator and re
cruiter. High point of his career, as
far as Cleary is concerned,
came during his tour of duty
as an Air Force recruiter at
Chattanooga, Tenn., from 1951
to 1955. During one 30-day pe
riod, he set an Air Force re
cruiting record by signing up
88 men.
A native of Brownsville,
Tex., Cleary plans to retire
from the Air Force at the end
of another five-year hitch.
Then he hopes to settle down
at San Antonio, Tex., with his
wife, Martha, and their four
children.

Lucia of the University of
California's school of medi
cine told the annual conven
tion of the American Society
of Enologists here.
"Diabetes is a disease in
which wine can be of great
help to the clinician," Lucia,
who is on the staff of the uni
versity's San Francisco medi
cal center, said.
"The effect of wine on dia
betes has been studied since
the early years of this cen
tury. "Of course, before the dis
covery of insulin, clinicians
had to rely on an accurate
knowledge of the foods and
beverages which would be
safe and permissible in the
diet of the diabetic patient.
Investigations
"Many investigations were
carried out using a variety of
foods and beverages and it
was found that not only
could wine, particularly a
dry wine, be included in the
diabetic diet, but it actually
seemed to exert n definitely
beneficial pharmacologic ef
fect in that more complete
assimilation of carbohydrates
occurred which, in turn,
brought about a decrease in
glycosuria and ketone body
excretion.
