With 10th Inning Explosion

York Yankee explosion and
It just about made a wreck
of both the Los Angeles An
gels and the American league
pennant race.
Seven runs poured over the
plate in the 10th inning rally
Tuesday night, crushing the
Angels, 11-4, and extending
the Yankees' first-place lead
to five full games.
It was the Angels' moment
of truth the game in which
they could have begun a late
run on the Yankecs-and the
fact is they gave It a great
try. But in the end they were
mothered-and only a miracle

enabled the Angels to take an

Yankees tied the score on

sixth-inning homer and took
a 4-3 lead on Bobby Richard
son's run-producing seventh
inning single. Wagner's clutch
hit tied it up again and gave
hope to the crowd of 30,830
in Los Angeles until the
Yankees went to hat, that is.
The Minnesota Twins beat
the Washington Senators, 5-2,
the Detroit Tigers topped the
Cleveland Indians, 10-1. the
Baltimore Orioles routed the
Chicago White Sox, 9-1, and
the Boston Red Sox downed
the Kansas City Athletics, 11-
6, in other AL games.
The Milwaukee Braves
shaded the St. Louis Cardi
nals, 6-5, the Cincinnati Reds
downed the Chicago Cubs, 2-0,
the Philadelphia Phillies
swept a doubleheader from
the Houston Colts, 5-3 and
7-4, and the New York Mets
snapped a 13-ga'me losing
streak with a 5-4 win after
losing the first game
doubleheader to the
burgh Pirates, 8-8.

Jim Bunning pitched a four-
hitler to win his 13th game of
the season and the 100th of
his big league career for the
Tigers. Bunning yielded a
first-inning homer to Al Lup
low and then set down the
Indians with three hits the
rest of the way. Al Kallne
had three hits for Detroit.
Robin Roberts won his
eighth game of the year and
the 242nd of his career be
hind a 10-hit Baltimore attack
that included a grand slam
homer by rookie Boog Powell.
Early Wynn, in search of the
299th win of his career, re
tired only one batter in the
first inning before being
routed.
Carl Yastrzemski hit a
three-run homer and drove in
two other runs to lead the
Red Sox' 15-hit attack. Earl
Wilson, aided by Arnold Ear-
ley in the ninth, picked up
his ninth win of the season.
Braves Nipped Cards
Lee Maye's 10th-inning sin
gle drove In the winning run
for the Braves and gave
Claude Raymond his fifth
triumph. Charlie James had
three hits, including a homer,
for the Cardinals while Gus
Bell had four hits and Tommy
Aaron homered for the
Braves.
Jim Maloney pitched eight
scoreless relief innings as the
Reds struggled to remain in
the NL race with their win
over the Cubs. Marty Ke
ough's homer was the big
blow for the Reds while
rookie Ken Hubbs of the Cubs
ran his record string of con
secutive errorless games to 64.
Art Mahaffey won his 17th
game and Jack Hamilton his
seventh as the Phillies made
it 15 in a row over the Colts.
Roy Sievers and Johnny Cal
lison hit back-lo-back homers
for the Phillies in the nightcap.
Pinch-hitter Marv Throne
berry's three-run, ninth-inning
homer enabled the Mets to
down the Pirates after Pitta
burgh won the opener with
the aid of Felix Mantilla's
three-run throwing error in

game.

Dodgers Slate Two With Phils

game series tonight against
the Philadelphia Phillies after
being idle Tuesday.
Dodger manager Walt Al
ston picked Pete Richert (2-2)
to start against Chris Short
(7-7) of Philadelphia in what
should provide Los Angeles
with an opportunity to close
out its road games in a breeze.
Following the Phillies set,
Alston herds his league-leading
club to New York over
the week end to meet the
Mets, who have been mathe
matically ruled out as pen
nant contenders this year. The
Mets may be charged with
their 100th loss of the year
by then.

'Retires'
As Coach

Casey Stengel, who always
said he'd- know when to quit,
announced his retirement to-day-bul
only from the coach
ing lines.
Marv Throneberry, on the
other hand, got such a belt out
of the new job he may even
try it again.
"I fired myself quick,"
Casey laughed, after taking a
brief turn in the coaching box
Monday during the nightcap
of a doubleheader between the
New York Mets and Pitts
burgh Pirates.
Stengel could afford to
laugh for the first time in
nearly two weeks because his
downtrodden Mets finally
ended a 13-game losing streak.
Reached The Ultimate
Throneberry was the man
who did it,
Casey reached the ultimate
in platooning Monday when
he used six coaches - includ
ing himself - during the night
cap. Here's how it all came
about:
Third base coach Solly
Hemus was ejected by um
pire Frank Walsh in the fifth
inning and Stengel took over
for him.
Outside of the first All-Star
game in Washington last
month, Casey's appearance on
the coaching lines was his
first in nearly 20 years.
Cookie Lavagetto, the Mets'
first base coach, moved over
to the third base line in the
sixth and outfielder Gene

Jerry Condray, Grants Pass,

at Medford Kartways.

That's when Casey signalled
from the dugout that he want

a bat and swing for Jim Hick
man. The Mets had two runners
on at the time and the Pirates
were ahead, 4-2., EIRoy Face
ran the count to 1-and-l and
then came In with a slider.
Throneberry swung and
sent the ball into the upper
right field stands for his 13th
homer and a 5-4 Met triumph.
And who do you suppose
clapped him on the backside
as he rounded first base? Out
fielder Richie Ashburn, who
had scored earlier in the in
ning and had taken over
Throneberry's job , as first
base coach.
