Siskiyou County
Fair Drew 30,000
Yreka - The Siskiyou coun
ty fair, held last week end at
the fairgrounds in Yreka,
drew some 30,000 persons, re
ported Ed Mathews, fair secretary-manager.
Attendance
was up 2,000 over last year.
The 30,000 attendance fig
ure was just 3,000 less than
the entire population of Siski
you county.
Total amount of money paid
out in prizes came to $20,
124.70. The annual fair parade held
on Saturday drew a large
crowd all along its route
through downtown Yreka.
The entrants all won a blue
ribbon for participating, but
the following winners of the
big award ribbons were an
nounced by Parade Judge
John Janson.
The Sweepstakes award
winner was the Civil War uni
formed sheriff's posse led by
District Attorney Albert New
ton. The music division award
was won by the Ashland Elks
Kilty band.
Float division act that won
the top award was won by
Clarice Reidel, who was sein
as a washerwoman of old-times.
The horse - drawn group
award was won by the Pony
club of Southern Oregon, the
Riding group award hy the
Lancerettes of Montague.
The family unit award was
won by Ruth Burton and
Dorothy Newton in a horse
drawn buggy; the best-dressed
single rider was Dorothy Hes
sig whn was dressed In vint
age 1800 clothes and rode side
saddle.
The bpsl marching unit was
the Yreka Junior Police, who
had a booth at the fair
grounds that was titled "Lost
and Found" for kids and other
things.
The vintage autos had an
award also and this was won
by E. J. Brown of "Brownies"
Service station In Yreka In his
1910 Cadillac.
Central Point Lions
Plan Project With
Gold Hill Lions Club
Central Point - The Central
Point Lions club met Aug.
14 for its regular meeting,
with B. W. Mushaney presid
ing in the absence of E. J.
Christie, who was on vacation.
Guests of the occasion were
members of the Gold Hill
Lions club, Donald E. Meister,
Grant Day, and Jerry Bowen.
A discussion was held on
some future projects, involv
ing the combined efforts of the
two clubs, to raise additional
funds for the Crater stadium
fund.
The next project of the
Central Point Lions will be
the installation of the seats
in the stadium.

be a "potentates party" for
members of Ben AH Shrine
at Winema hall at the Siski
you county fairgrounds. H
will be a semi-formal affair.
The potentate of the shrine
in the Sacramento area will
be gueit.
Yreka - Monday, 12 noon,
town hall meeting for persons
interested in plans for the
route of proposed U.S. 99 free
way in Yreka area, at Elks
club hall. Reservations must
be made at chamber of com
merce office by end of this
week.

Dedicate Memorial
Montague - The Shasta Val
ley Garden club of Montague
will present a Blue Star Me
morial marker In a dedication
ceremony Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. at
the last portion of U.S. 97
highway, near Grass Valley.
State Sen. Randolph Collier
will be one of the guests at
the dedication ceremony.

Grants Pass The J o s e-
phine County fair got under
way this morning, opening a
four-day run through Saturday.

The blue star comes from the
service flag. The idea for this
was conceived in 1944 in New
Jersey and was instigated here
by the then president of the
club in Montague. Mrs. Mor
ris C. Prather in I960.
Highlighting the fair are
appearances by singer Den
nis Day, who headlines a
grandstand show that may be
seen today at 8 p.m. and to
morrow at 2 and 8 p.m.
Pony trotting and chariot
races will be featured Friday
and Saturday at 2 p.m. and
there will be square dancing
those two evenings at 8:30.
Calling will be "Singin"'

An admission charge is col
lected at the gates, but there
is no additional charge for the
various events inside the fair
grounds. The Josephine County fair
grounds are located on high
way 199 southwest of Grants
Pass.
Also featured during the
fair will be home economics
and likestock displays today
and tomorrow, a 4-H horse
show and junior stock auction
Friday night and an open
horse show Saturday night.

Slated Aug. 29 in RR
Rogue River - First meet,
ing of the Rogue River kinder
garten will be held Wednes
day, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at
the kindergarten building on
Main st. here.
Pre-registration will be held
at this meeting. All parents
of 5-year-olds or those who
will be 5 on or before Nov. 13
are invited to attend the meet,
ing. First month's tuition is
due and payable at the tima
of registration.

Farewell Party
Given For Teachers
Leaving Prospect
Prospecl-A farewell party
was given for teachers that
are leaving Prospect to teach
at other schools by Mr, and
Mrs. Roscoe Larson in their
back yard recently. Larson is
principal of Prospect High
school.
The teachers that are leav
ing present for the party were
Mr. and Mrs. Duane Payne
and family, Mr. and Mrs.
Marc Smith and family, and
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Drake.
Teachers present that are
not leaving were the new
grade school principal, Mr.
and Mrs. Lloyd Hale, Mr. and
Mrs. Vernon Haddeland and
children, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald
Gardner, and Dean Boyer and
family.
A granddaughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Larson was also there,
Miss Annette Flynn of Med
ford who has been visiting
her grandparents.
Barbecue Planned
By Montague Clubs
Montague - On September
A there will be a barbecue at
the home of either Ray
Wheeler or Norman Sears at
8:30 p.m. to honor those who
have given of their lime,
money and efforts to make the
local swimming pool a suc
cess. Beef for the barbecue was
donated by Byron Boise who
is a past president of the Shas
ta Valley Community club
and now resides south of here.
He won the whole beef in a
contest held during the local
Junior Hodeo.
The pool has been com
pletely paid off. The land
scaping will be done by the
combined efforts of the Shasta
Valley Garden club and the
Shasta Valley Community
club.

To Appear on KBES-TV
Illinois Valley-Mrs. Bernice
Anderson will accompany the
nine candidates running for
Labor Day Jubilee queen to
Mcdford Aug. 28 to appear on
television station KBES-TV,
channel 5, at 3 p.m.
Mrs. Anderson will be mas
ter of ceremonies for the pro
gram with Mrs. Myron Ter
penlng temporarily filling in
for chairman, Mrs. John Wat-
enpaugh.
Happy Camp - A parly was
given by Librarian Rena Gun
ter for the children taking
part in the Smokey the Bear
reading program at the li
brary recently.
Miss Gunter, librarian for
the Happy Camp branch of the
Siskiyou County library, gave
award certificates to twelve
students completing a re
quired number of books con
cerning conservation.
A guest speaker from the
Happy Camp Ranger Station,
Earmen Pence, spoke to the
children explaining the mean
ing of the many Smokey the
Bear posters that are display
ed at various campgrounds
and other places in the forest.
Pence also explained to the
children the cause of the re
cent fire near Steelhead Re
sort and the cost of such a
thing caused by a careless
fisherman. Pence told the chil
dren how to build a proper
campfire and to always fol
low the rules on the back side
of the campfire permit.

23 young readers enrolled,
however due to vacation trips
some of the youngsters did not
complete the required number
