Due to Inhibition
Washington - If your cre
ative five-year-old seems to
lose his creativity the moment
he enters kindergarten, don't
blame the teacher or the
school. The cause is probably
scx-his sudden awareness of
sex-his sudden awareness of
he is facing because of It.
This advice from the Na
tional Education association
is based on a recent research
study conducted at the Uni
versity of Minnesota and re
ported by Dr. E. Paul Tor
rance, director of the uni
versity's bureau of education
al research.
When children begin to
notice sex differences-when
they learn that some activ
ities are taboo for girls and
others are not appropriate for
boys-that's when their ability
to think creatively takes a
sharp drop.
Affects Creativity
Usually that's around age
five, the researchers found.
The kind of behavior adults
expect of a child that age
represents a crisis that affects
his creative abilities, the re
port found. Children in other
countries experience similar
crises when their behavior
patterns are changed, the
study Indicated, but the pat
terns are different In differ
ent cultures.
For American youngsters
similar crises are reported to
occur at ages nine, 13 and 17.
"It is interesting to note
that each of the generalized
drops occur at ages at which
the transitions from one ae-
velopmental stage to another
begins," says Dr. Torrance.
'The drop at about five oc
curs with the end of the child
hood stage and the beginning
of the juvenile stage with its
demands for social accommo
dation and compromise and
acceptance of authorities out
side him. The second drop oc
curs wit hthe onset of the pre
adolescent stage with its in
creased need for consensual
validation, peer approval,
Identification with peer of
the same sex, and conformity
to peer norms," according to
Dr. Torrance, The third oc
curs with the onset of the pre-
cence with its increased anxi
eties and striving lor approval
of the opposite sex.

"We have observed," Dr.
Torrance points out, "that
concerns about sex approp
riateness and emphasis on sex
differences become tremen
dously inhibiting at about age
five and continue into the be
ginning of the first grade."
When youngsters were
asked to think of Improve
ments that could be made in
certain toys, "we found that
boys at this age would fre
quently refuse to offer any
suggestions for Improving a
nurse kit and some girls sim
ilarly refused to think of
ideas for improving a toy fire
truck. Some of the more cre
ative boys, howover, first
changed the nurse kit to a
doctor's kit, after wnich it
was quite legitimate and re
spectable to think of ideas.

of experience became taboo,

Another inhibiting factor in
young children, Dr. Torrance
said, was found to be the
forced stifling of fantasy.
"Many children at this age
(five) are inhibited in their
thinking because they have
been warned harshly by par
ents and teachers that they
'mutt eliminate fantasy. Al
though we are interested in
developing a sound type of
creativity, we need to keep
fantasy alive until the child'!
