The Family Council
Editor's note: The Family Council consists of a Judgr, a
phvrniatrlst, three rlercymen. three edttorf and a wtimrn'i editor.
Kai-h arUcle Is a summary of a family dttaKreemeiit presented to the
council. The Council dead with problems, major and minor,
encountered by guidance counselors and social workers. Edited by
by Mrs. Alma Denny (Copyright by General Fe.itures Corp.)
Vera C. - He says the boat
is for all of us, but he has
the fun.
Darryl C. - What better
way is there than boating for
sharing a good time?
Vera C. - When I agreed
to our buying a small motor
boat it was because Darryl
sold me on the matter of to
getherness. He insisted there
was no better way to hold the
family together than through
outings and trips on our own
boat. This sounded just right,
since we have two sons, aged
10 and 12, who are always
rarin' to go somewhere and
whom it's hard to keep up
with.
Well, you can't imagine
the letdown. In actuality, Dar
ryl's the only one who enjoys
The Four Seas - that's the
name - after us four C s. Me s
there all dressed up in his
white hat and the blue suit
with the braid, busy with the
wheel and the instruments,
while I'm stuck in the galley
cooking, and the kids are
bored stiff. The rest of us are
Just the crew and in the way,
most of the lime.
I want Darryl to sell the
thing and let's get a bunga
low.
Darryl C. - They're all just
sulking because they can't
perform my functions on the
boat, and I won't assume
theirs. We can have only one
captain, at least at this point
where Vera knows zero about
navigation, and the children
are too young for a license.
But there's plenty they can
do to make our trips interest
ing for themselves. Vera
needn't spend so much time
below. Our meals needn't be
so fancy. She could be at the
mast beside me learning what
she can about the mechanics
of (he craft. And the boys

should find a wealth of ex
citement in the maps and
charts we carry. I've invited
them to help me write up our
travel logs, to insert their
own snapshots and impres
sions. But no: Now they're
sorry they didn't go to camp.
I won't sell the boat. I'll
keep on trying to sell the
family on the superiority of
a vacation afloat.
The Council - The boats
men of our acquaintance con
fess, some of them sheepish
ly, that Vera has a legitimate
gripe. The craft most likely
to succeed in giving every
member of the family a feel
ing of participation might be
a sailboat, rather than a mo
tor d riven yacht. With the
latter, piloting and navigation
are the main challenges and
they're handled by one per
son usually. The other, after
the initial exhilaration of
fresh air and foam fade away,
must scare up things to do
between yawns.
Cooking Is no vacation for
Vera just a little harder
to do in tiny quarters. Re
striction of movement for the
boys Is nothing for them to
look forward to. Darryl's best
bet now is to 'fess up. Yes,
he bought the boat (and paint
rosy pictures) for his own
sake. If money were extra
plentiful, he'd go out on it
alone and plan other kinds of
outings for the whole family
together. Or Vera could hop
off to Europe wilh the girls,
wniie llie fellers attend a dude
ranch out West. But now they
are all committed to watery
vacations "en famillc" for the
next few years, and it's up to
Darryl to find ways to in
clude them in the fun of it all.
They're rebelling against go
ing along merely to watch
him have fun.
The solution Is a matter of
advance planning, with all
views being listened lo and
all tastes being considered.
Naturally there can be no to
getherness at the helm, any
more than two people can
drive the same automobile at
the same time. The safety of
the boat and passengers re
quires Darryl's dedicated at
tention. He shares that respon
sibility with the Coast Guard.
But he can regard Vera and
the boys as assistant captains,
or at least apprentices, and
take every opportunity when
The Four Seas lies at anchor,
or In port, to increase their
familiarity with the art of
seamanship. His sons will then
have the appetizing Incentive
of knowing they may be able
lo lake trips by themselves
In a few years.
Then, for Vera, the rnllfntr
time might be reduced and
the landings, more freouent.
Overnight stopovers sound
good, as does pitching camp
on an interestine stretch r
land. Beach picnics and clam.
bakes may be added lo the
Coming Attractions. Both go
ing ana geumg there can be
fun for all the C.'s.

Bicycle Riders Are
Reminded of Laws
As the long Labor day week
end approaches, Medford
Chief of Police Charles
Champlin reminded residents
to be cautious of bicycles.
A record 29 million bicy
cles are on the roads today, he
said. As road traffic Is likely
to be at an all-time high, mo
torists should be especially
watchful of bicycle riders.
Several rules were mention
ed by Champlin for bicy
clists. Among them were to
observe all traffic regulations;
keep to the right and ride sin
gle file; and use headlight and
tail light or reflector tor night
riding. The night rirlcr should
also wear light colored cloth
ing, he noted.
A workable horn or bell
should be used, and the bicy
cle should be in perfect work
ing order. No passengers
should be carried, especially
those that would interfere
wilh vision.
Proper hand signals should
be used, and I he rider should
refrain from riding on side
walks. Champlin said.
