ed lymphedema of an arm.
Lymph is a thin, milkv fluid
which runs through liny ves
sels (the lymphatics), and
serves to bathe and nourish
our body cells. Edema means
that the tissues are full nf
fluid. Lymphedema is what
causes some unhappy women
to have very large legs.
Because spreading cancer
ceils often follow the lymph
atic channels, when a surgeon
removes a cancerous breast he
usually takes out most of the
lymphatics in the nearbv arm
pit. If pcrhnps he leaves too
few of the little vessels, or if
something happens later to
destroy the few that he
leaves, the woman can get a
big arm.
I was much cheered lo read
that in 94 out of the 114
women studied, the trouble
with Ihe arm was not due to
recurrent cancer; and 1 was
glad to hear that in many
cases it obviously was not due
to some x-ray treatment that
had been given (because the
swelling came first).
In most cases, the doctors
decided it was due to inflam
mation. Accordingly, they
gave antibiotics, and usually
this treatment helped. Also.
they had the woman wear a
light "gradient pressure
leeve" extending from the
wrist up to the shoulder.
When such a sleeve gets loose
it is of no value, and it must
be replaced by a new one. In
any big city there are medical
supply houses which probably
can supply such a sleeve.
Testing For
Tuberculosis
Dr. J. Arthur Myers re
cently spoke before the an
nual meeting of the National
Education Association. There
he pointed out that still, with
all the tremendous advances
in the treatment of tuber
culosis, there are loo many
children who are dying of
this disease, and they arc dy
ing because the town in which
they live is not concerned
enough with the easily solv
able problem of saving them.

charges of "conduct unbecom
ing a police officer."
Clark was suspended bv
City Manager Hugh MeKinley
and Capt. W. G. Crease, assist
ant chief of police.
The action came after an
investigation of charges in an
anonymous letter mailed to
the department July :10-
Clark called the letter "a
concoction of malicious infor
mation and half-truths" but
added "I have no criticism of
Mr. MeKinley and Capt.
Crease as they both have been
very fair "

should see to it that in their
schools all children, every so
often, are skin-tested with
tuberculin. This can quickly
and easily be done, and it
won't do the children a par
ticle of harm. It will show
which children have become
infected with the disease. On
going to the home of an in
fected child, the health of
ficer may find some old per
son, perhaps a grandparent,
who has what he thinks is a
harmless cough, but what
really is active tuberculosis.
In that case, if the grandchild
is not to lose his health and
perhaps his life, either he or
the grandparent must imme
diately leave that home.
I speak feelingly because
the dear chum of my youth
died of T.B. at age 22; his
brother died of it when he
was in his twenties, and his
sister's life was ruined by a
tuberculous hip. All of them
caught the disease in their
early childhood as they
played in the sick room of
their tuberculous grand
mother. Nothing was ever
done to change this situation
because the children's mother
was a faith-healer.
Alcoholism
In a decent article, Dr.
Livni, of South Africa, re
ports his experience with 475
alcoholics. He says so truly
that "pleading, reasoning,
warning and threatening are
a sheer waste of lime"-wives
of alcoholics please note.
As Dr, Livni says, group ac
tivities are of great value for
many alcoholics - particularly
those who are lonely, without
a wife and perhaps with
drawn from society. Such men
will accept companionship
with others like themselves
who, having been through the
same hell, understand the sit
uation perfectly, and would
never think of criticizing a
brother who had "a bit too
much," or who after a year
or more of good behavior has
"fallen off the wagon."
Dr. Livni says that in his
experience, drugs have been
of little value in helping a
man to stay sober. Of his 473
patients, 2B9 quickly got over
their desire to be cured, and
quit coining for an interview.
This is typical.
That alcoholism can be a
serious disease is shown by
the fact that during the per
iod of study, 15 patients died
Of the 191 who kept seeing
the doctor, 68 remained sober
for at least a year, and a few
behaved well for from 2 to S
years. Eight committed sui
cide as an ."easy way out."
Others died while seeing
snakes, or died from pneu
monia or other infections, or
from severe poisoning with
alcohol.
