East-West Shrine
Tussle Will Have
'No Holds Barred'
Pendleton's Ent-Weit
Shrine all-star football game
will be played with "no hold
barred."
That is the report of Jack
Woodward, Phoenix high tu
tor, who is head coach of the
East team for the Aug. 25
game.
In a letter to the Mail Trib
une, Woodward reported that
the East and West coaches
and Shrine game officials met
early this week and agreed
that the game would be played
with no restrictions as to of
fense and defense.

Chico Ruiz of San Diego
was a rather busy man in
Thursday night's Pacific
Coast league play.
He collected four hits, stole
two bases, scored two runs
and drove in the winning run
in the Padres' 3-2 victory
over the Tacoma Giants.
In other games, Vancouver
topped Portland 3-2 in 12 In
nings, Spokane defeated Salt
Lake City 5-3 and Seattle
won a pair from Hawaii, 1-0
and 6-2.
Tacoma was tied with San
Diego 2-2 in the eighth fol
lowing a two-run pinch hit
homer by Dusty Rhodes.
However, in the bottom
half of the inning, Jim Plsoni
got aboard on a fielder's
choice, advanced to second on
a bunt and crossed on a dou
ble by Ruiz.

bases of the season In the

These restrictions were put
in effect, in the first place,
at the insistence of Shrine
coaches and had been in force
since the first A-l Shrine
game in Portland for both
State -Metro and East -West
games. Coaches had felt that,
with the limited time avail
able, it was asking too much
to prepare to meet different
defenses and so in turn had
to limit or restrict the offense.
East Could Suffer
Woodward said that he and
his staff agreed first with
West Head Coach Bob Peter
son, Myrtle Point, and his
staff to take away the restric
tions. They, then found the
game officials "real happy"
about it since they feel It will
open up the game more and
make it more exciting.
The Phoenix mentor point
ed out, just the same, that
East coaches may be the ones
to suffer because of the fact
that "Coach Peterson uses
more formations than Heintz
has pickles." Added Wood
ward, "Really, I would rather
score a dull victory than have
an exciting victory. But, hon
estly, it should be more fun.
And, this game is supposed
to be Just for fun. Ha!
The East mentor reported
that all four players from the
Rogue valley are showing
well and are bound to see
lots of action. When Wood
ward wrote, Steve Geren,
Eagle Point, was fighting it
out with Bill Fisher for the
left halfback job. Mike Cons-
bruck, Phoenix, and Roger
Hlatl, Vale, were battling for

had due to the fact we have

the East coach said.
Woodward also stated, . .
It is a great experience to
coach under these conditions.
We have the boys on hand all
the time. There Is nothing to
interfere with their 'educa
tion' such as work, school,
etc."
The Phoenix coach describ
ed the two practices per day
as rather hard on him since
he is not used to them. He
said, nevertheless, he realizes
what he misses by not having
the opportunity to have two
per day at Phoenix. He re
ported that it seems his squad
had done more in two days of
daily double drills than can
be accomplished by one nighl
drill per day over two weeks.

Final plans are being com -

hard-lop races at the Medford
speedway.
Officials predicted driving
skill would be of the utmost
importance as racers - gun
their cars around the one
fourth mile dirt track.
A full slate of events is
planned for the afternoon
competition starting with the
time trials at noon. Following
trial runs drivers will race
for time against the clock,
participate in one of two tro
phy dashes, heat races and a
semi-main event. Main event
will climax the afternoon's
activity.
Trophies are being award
ed to both "A'1 and "B" win
ners of the trophy dash.
