Cutter Beached
In Rescue Attempt
Newport, Ore. - IUPII - A 52-
foot Coast Guard culler at
tempting lo aid a beached
commercial fishing boat was
washed ashore near here
Wednesday.
The cutter later was taken
off the beach by two 36-foot
Coast Guard vessels. The 26
foot fishing boat, the Florence
K, remained aground.
The culler, which is sta
tioned al Yaqtiina Bay, was
driven onto the beach by
heavy waves. 11 suffered
slight damage to lis port
screw.
The fishing boat was cap
sized by a large wave and
then driven ashore. Its skip
per. Carl L. Mason of New
port, and son, Eddie, swam
through the surf to safely.
The Coa.st Guard "aid the
stricken fishing vessel prob
ably will be removed from
the beach bv trailer.
