This Week's Ranch and Modern Home
By
HIAWATHA ESTES. A.I.B.D.
For the family with a lim
ited building budget, this de
sign offers the advantages of
a much more expensive home.
The cost and square footage
of this house belies it spacious
ness and livability.
Behind the handsome ranch
style exterior-which would be
a complement to any community-lies
a "houseful" of con
venience. A used brick planter
at the front of the bedroom
wing plus the continuation of
the roof along the sides of
this wing and around the
front until it reaches the bay
window, is a real eye-catcher,
the diamond pane window pat
tern has been repeated in the
design of the garage door.
Sunlight passes through the
glass panes in the front door
and lights the center hall
entry. From this entry, one
can enter the family room
kitchen, living room or the
short hall leading to all the
bedrooms.
Wardrobe Space
By properly locating the
wardrobes in all bedrooms,
there is an abundant amount
of wardrobe space totaling 30
feet. There is also a guest and
linen closet in the bedroom
wing. A shoulder high sliding
window in the front bedroom
provides cross ventilation and
a bed or other piece of furni
ture can still be placed be
neath the window.
The rear living room with
its adjoining patio is condu
cive to entertaining and out
door living. This is one of the
highlights of this workable
ranch plan - the generous use
of glass where it counts the
most.
The hub of this, handsome
dwelling is the open area that
encompasses the family room
kitchen. The U-shaped kitchen
is only partially separated
from the family room with
cabinets and an eating bar.
This large open area meets
the old fashion concept of the
kitchen as a friendly gather
ing place with plenty of space
to move around. It has been
adapted here to today's ideas
of efficiency.
The laundry plus broom
and pantry closets are in the
service. There is direct access
from the service to the garage.
An efficient horizontal
forced air furnace is located
in the attic but could be
placed in the garage if preferred.
Complete working drawln.s
for this plan ran be purchased
at a cost of S7.&0 for the first
set and 55 or each additional
set when ordered at the same
time. This plan will be avail
able at these prices until Dec.
A. Please allow two to three
weeks for delivery. If the above
home does not entirely meet
with ynur approval, a new home
plan book. Ranch and Modern
Homes, can be purchased for $2.
Send all orders for either plans
or books to: Hiawatha Estes,

Stalin Reference Removed
From Red China Publication
Hong Kong OJPI) Refer
ences to Stalin have been re
moved from an important Chi
nese Communist publication,
the official Peiping Press has
disclosed.
The patience of the Chinese
when confronted with a clear
cut challenge, such as Soviet
Premier Nikita Khrushchev's
unequivocal de - Stalinization
campaign, may account for
the change.
There is no indication that
China has changed its basic
policy on world affairs to con
form to the more moderate
Soviet line. Recent propagan
da attacks on the Laotian set
tlement approved by the Unit
ed States and Russia have
made this clear.
The omission of Stalin's
name was considered a tacti
cal move on the part of the
Chinese and not a switch from
their strategy of pursuing the
tough policies of the late So
viet dictator.
It was noticed in the Pci-
Humphrey's Take
In Dividends Told
Washington - HOT - Former
Treasury Secretary George M.
Humphrey collected more
than $2.3 million in dividends
and the value of stock he held
In a company with a lucra
tive government contract in
creased by $5.7 million in
eight years, it was disclosed
Wednesday.
This was brought out at a
hearing of the Senate stock
pile investigating subcommit
tee. The span of time during
which Humphrey's wealth in
creased by roughly $8 2 mil
lion included the years from
1953 to 1957 when he served
as President E i s e n hower's
treasury secretary, according
to today's testimony.
Walter H. Henson, a super
visor in the General Account
ing Office, said that most of
the dividends and stock ap
preciation were attributable
to 1 government contract sign
ed lour days before Humph
rey took office.
ping Daily, official newspaper
of the Chinese Communist par
ty. The paper appears to have
devoted the bulk of its Aug.
1 issue to publishing the full
text of a book entitled "How
To Be a Good Communist."
It was written by Liu Shao,
Chi, Communist China's chief
of state and second-ranking
party theoretician. Liu wrote
the first draft in 1939, when
the Communist armies were
defending what was left of
northern China from the Jap
anese invaders and Stalin was
the unquestioned leader of the
entire Communist world.
"How To Be a Good Com
munist" is divided into nine
sections. The title of the sec
ond section seems to have un
dergone a significant altera
tion in the latest revised edi
tion. Formerly the title was: "To
Be the Best Student of Marx,
Engels, Lenin and Stalin."
Now it is: "To Be a Good
Student of Mark and Lenin."
Older Text Omitted
The older text exalted the
"words and deeds, career and
quality" of the four men as
models to be imitated. This
has been omitted now.
Also, many quotations from
Stalin's works which former
ly constituted important sup
ports for Liu Shao-Chi's argu
ment have been deleted.
The omission of Stalin's
name is regarded by observ
ers of Communist affairs here
as significant. Up to now,
there has been no indication
that Peiping has conducted a
"de-Stalinization" campaign
as has been done in Russia.
Portrait Appears
In fact, Stalin's portrait has
been appearing at important
state rallies and anniversaries.
Moreover, Liu Shao-Chi is
well known as being Mao Tse
Tung's heir-apparent to the
all important post of party
chairmanship. He is one of the
few men Mao trusts complete
ly. It was Liu who headed the
Chinese delegation to the 1960
meeting of Communist par
ties. Basic differences in outlook
remain, as evidenced by the
I recent opposing statements by
China and Russia on the Laos
! settlement, and by continued
j maneuvering for influence in
North Vict Nam.
But China appears to have
! made a minor concession that
I should help make the differ
j enccs between the two giants
loss obvious to the casual ob
I server.
