could do. I saved another
man's son and killed two
of my own children.
"At the moment there was
nothing else I could do. Look
ing back ... if I had to do
it again. I'd have to do just
what 1 did."

trip.

Sanford's tragic moment of
decision came seconds laler.
"Without warning, both
turned off the shoulder and
into the roadway directly in
front of me," he said. "One
boy saw my car and darted
back. The other boy did not.
"There was no lime In slop.
There was nothing else to do
- out of human compassion.
It was either hit and kill
- that boy, or swerve.
"I cramped the wheel hard
over. The total two-lane road
way is only 22 feet wide.

a dubious victory Monday -the
fir tree with the biggest
hips.
But they said Washington's
biggest fir tree is fatter
farther up and taller as well.
The judges were trying to
settle a long-standing contest
between the two states over
which can boast the biggest
Douglas fir.
They said Oregon's Catsop
fir measured 15.48 fret in
diameter four and one-half
feet above the base, the of
ficial measuring level. Wash
ington's big tree at Quee's
measured 14 46 feet.
The Washington tree, how
ever, was more than two and
one-half feet bigger around
than the Oregon tree al its
top. And it was 202 feet tall,
compared to 200 feet, six in
ches for the Oregon tree.
