CENTRAL POINT WATER RESERVOIR
Construction of a million-Kallon water res
ervoir was completed in Central Point re
cently by a Florida construction firm. The
reservoir, which is expected to be in oper
ation within 60 days, is located at Fifth and
Cedar sts., near the location of the former
50,000-gallon tower (shown in background).
The new tank is 75 feet in diameter and
30 feet high (note size compared to chil
dren standing in front, center). Bids for
the Improvement and enlargement of Cen
tral Point's water system were opened in
January. The city approved the sale of
$150,000 in bonds, authorized by Central
Point voters, and the 15-year bonds were
sold. Besides the reservoir, the bonds fi
nanced 6,500 feet of additional eight-inch
water mains. The tank is a steel shell en
cased in gunite. A crew of 11 men worked
11 weeks to construct the tank. Local labor
was used except for applying the gunite.

Water Skier Abandons
Distance Attempt
Astoria -41PII- Water skier
Jerry Springer said today ne
has given up his plan to water
ski from Astoria to Orofino,
Idaho, this summer.
Springer said the reason
was a dry spell which had cut
the flow of the Clearwater
river in Idaho to a point too
low for a boat to operate. He
said he hopes to do it next
year.
Arsonist Blamed
For Brush Fire
Clarcmont, Calif - OJPIi - An
arsonist-set brush fire which
threatened expensive homes
in the Padua hills has been
contained by a massive air
ground fire fighting force.
About 100 homes were evac
uated when the fire raced
throuKh the tinder dry brush.
Also threatened was the color
ful Padua Hills theater where
Mexican-American theatrical
events have been staged for
many years.
More than 500 men as well
as six borate bombers battled
the fire under the direction
of Los Angeles County Fire
Chief Keith Klinger. Klinger,
determined to keep the fire
from becoming another disas
ter similar to the Bel Air fire
in Los Angeles last fall, di
rected the fight from a heli
copter. More than 800 acres were
covered by the blaze two
miles north of here and 35
miles east of Los Angeles. No
homes were damaged and no
injuries were reported.
Jerry Taylor, 27, LaVcrne,
Calif., was arrested late Mon
day after a ranger saw him
leaving the area where the
blaze started. Taylor, an un
employed truck driver, admit
ted setting the fire and "some
others I can't remember." He
was booked on suspicion of
arson.
Udall Proposes
Acquiring Land
For Recreation
Washington -HOT- Interior
Secretary Stewart L. Udall,
endorsing legislation to fi
nance the program, told Con
gress Tuesday new outdoor
recreation lands must be sub
stantially acquired within the
next 10 years or be lost for
such use.
The program would be fi
nanced largely through users
fees.
"If we do not begin now to
acquire these lands, they will
soon be unavailable because
of price, or they will have
been developed for uses in
compatible with outdoor rec
reational use," Udall said in
prepared testimony before the
Senate Interior committee.
Fund Repayable
A $500 million federal fund
would be put up to underwrite
land purchases, repayable lat
er. Udall said that at the pres
ent rale outdoor recreation
visits which jumped 10 per
cent last year will "at
least double within the next
eight years." This pressure,
he said, will "continue for
many, many years ahead."
The National Association of
Manufacturers, in a statement
filed with the committee, said
the land ariuisition program
conflicts with recommenda
tions of the Outdoor Recrea
tion Review committee and
j with existing legislation. The

urged that the acquisition be

coming year was discussed
and plans were made which

and national program on the
eradication of tuberculosis.
