Reds Win Ninth Straight;
Still Are Pennant Contender
By FRED DOWN
UPI Sport! Writer
Frank Robinson is on the
loose-and that means the Cin
cinnati Reds must still be
reckoned with in the National
league race.
The Reds are 6'2 games
behind the first-place Los An
pclcs Dodgers and lour behind
the second-place San Francis
co Giants but they've reeled
olf nine straight victories and
have a four-came scries com
ing up with the Dodgers this
week end.
And the way Robinson is
going they can't yet be
counted out of the race.
Won Award
Robinson, who won the
league's Most Valuable Play
er award in 1961, could very
well join Ernie Banks as the
enly NL players to take it two
consecutive years. He's bat
ting .343, has knocked in 102
runs and has hit 27 homers
and 42 doubles.

2 World Champs Slated

New Vork-iUPll-Two world

FeatherweiRht ruler Davey

On Saturday night welter
weight champion Emile Grif

In two previous bouts each

Giants Open
Road Trip
Chicago - IUPH -The San
Francisco Giants, still flush
with victory after a sweep of
mighty Los Angeles, opened a
12-game road trip today
against the Chicago Cubs.
The Giants have only sec
ond division foes during this
Eastern swing. After the Cubs,
they meet Milwaukee, New
York and Philadelphia.
But even teams of this cal
ibre have been tough on San
Francisco in road action this
year. Furthermore, there is a
gaping hole in the Giants'
lineup since Jimmy Daven
port's knuckle injury has kept
him home.
Davenport is one of the fin
est glovemcn at third base
around and is sticking .314
besides. His absence puts a big
loud on Harvey Kuenn, who
will move in from left field to
lake over at the hot corner
during must of the road trip.
San Francisco entered to
day's Cub tiff just 2's games
back of the Dodgers. Jack
Sanford, whose 1 5-6 record is
the team's best, was to pitch
the opener for Alvin Dark's
troops here today. The Dodg
ers meanwhile face rugged
Pittsburgh tonight.
An interesting sidelight in
today's Cub-Giant game cen
ters around Chicago rookie
second sacker Ken Hubbs,
who has played 56 consecutive
games without an error.
If he does not commit a
bobble today, Hubbs will
equal the mark set by Red
Schocndicnst in 1930.
The Giants. Cubs and Dodg
ers were all idle Monday.
Jerry Lucas Sues
Lane For $100,000
Chicago - il'Pl' - Jerry Lucas,
the prize plum of the Ameri
can Basketball League ABL,
has sued Frank Lane, general
manager of a club in the rival
National Basketball Associa
tion NBA. for $100,000 for
libel and slander
The suit was filed Monday
against Lane, the well-travel-ed
baseball executive now
with the Chicago basketball
Zephrys. Lucas said Lane in
timated belore meetini: of the
I'.S. Basketball Writers As
sociation Aug. 3 that Lucas
had signed a professional con
tract while playing basketball
t Ohio State. I
will be staged at the Helsinki
Stadium, built for the Olym
pic games in 1952. Promoter
Elis Ask hopes for a crowd
of more than 25,000 and a
gate of more than $150,000.
Moore's guarantee is at least
$30,000.
Challenger Maeki, former
European amateur champion,
has had but 10 bouts since he
turned professional in 1960.
He won eight, lost one and
drew in one but never scored
a knockout,
Saturday night's television
fight at Tacoma is slaged there
in conjunction with the Na
tional Boxing Association's
annual convention, which
opens in that city the follow
ing day.
It will be the second fight
for champion Griffith since
his fatal title victory over the
late Benny Kid Paret on
March 24. He beat Ralph
Dupas In a title fight on July
13.
Griffith will be favored at
about 8-5 over Mover because
of his punch. Each is an ex
cellent boxer.
Emil and Denny had their
two fights in 1960. Griffith
won the first at New York,
March 1 1; but Moyer took an
avenging decision in their re
turn bout at Portland, Ore.,
April 26.
