Cuckoo, One Kaw Kw,
Signal! Coming of Rain
Very few of the neighbors
knew what manner of crea
ture made the call. None had
seen it; only the harsh voice
was coming from the forest,
and very often just before a
storm
in those days the people
were apprehensive of all
things they coudn't see or
didn't understand. The
strange voice from the forest
that repeated over and over
the harsh "cow-uh, cow-uh,
cow-uh" was heavy with the
mysterious and the unknown.

before a rain storm, it became
a rain omen. When the mourn
ful cry came from the sur
rounding forest, the housewife
hurried to close the windows
and fill the woodbox with dry
wood, preparing for a rainy
spell.
One day the owner of the
voice was located - a slender,
gray bird with a long tail and
short, rounded wings and a
black bill. The discoverer no
ticed, too, that the bird flew
with a quick, gliding flight.
Perhaps he was the one that
named the bird "kaw kaw,"

National Council
Official To Visit
A senior consultant of the
National Safety council from
Chicago, 111., is scheduled to
meet Thursday, Aug. 16, with
members of the Medford Safe
ty council to discuss Medford's
home safety inventory pro
gram, according to Clyde
Fichtner, chairman of the
Medford Safety council.
Doris E. Mersdorf, senior
consultant in the home depart
ment of the National Safety
council, will spend the day
with local council members
and representatives from the
city health, fire and building
departments.
They will discuss the Home
Inventory program, a "tool"
designed to assist communi
ties in evaluating their cur
rent home safety program-
m i n g efforts and to assist
them in developing more ef
fective programs for the fu
ture, Fichtner said.

every two years by the Home
department of the National
Safety council under the guid
ance and direction of the
Home Conference's Inventory
committee, Fichtner added.

does look something like a
dove and if so often heard
before a rain, he renamed it
the "rain dove." Today we
know this bird as the cuckoo,
of which at least two varieties
inhabit most of the United
States - the yellow-billed and
the black-billed.
The yellow-biled cuckoo la
found abundantly in the
South, while more of the
black-billed cuckoos frequent
the northern states.
Distinguishing Features
The long tail of the yellow
billed cuckoo has a black edg
ing on the outer tail feathers.
And sure enough, its northern
cousin has the lower mandible
of the bill a jet black.
Most of the cuckoo's habits
have now been observed and
recorded, enough in fact to
discredit the supposition that
this graceful, shy bird is a
bird "of mystery." In fact It
is a bird of considerable
value, as one of its favorite
foods is tent caterpillars. In
areas where the cuckoo is In
good supply there is little
damage to trees due to tent
caterpillars.
We have to admit there is
some sense to the "rain busi
ness," so much so in fact that
"rain-crow" has become a
common name for this bird,
and it still is listened to and
obeyed when it calls for rain.
It may be discouraging to
some to know that this
cuckoo does not sound at all
like the funny little object
that pops out of a clock and
yells "cuckoo, cuckoo."

A 13-ycar-old Medford boy
was lodged in Jackson county
Juvenile detention home Mon
day alter he admitted to city
police he had prowled several
cars parked near the Catholic
church, 326 South Dakota avc.
Sunday morning.
