things in the rain barrel be
sides water, especially when
the barrel! had been estab
lished for some little time.
Female mosquitoes knew
where the barrel was located;
in fact they knew where
every barrel in the neighbor
hood was, and they visited
them all, depositing their
eggs in the warm water.
Frogs, Too
Frogs either fell in from
Hie roof, or the eggs were car
ried hy a bird or the wind,
for oft-times tadpoles swam
in the murky depths. Some
times boys would store min
nows in the barrel, not be
cause the fish ale the mosqui
to larvae, hut to fatten them
up (or some future fishing
trip.
Occasionally, a foolhardy
bird, deceived hy the dark
ness of the WHter into think
ing it was shallow, tried to
bathe and came to an tin
timely end. Very often the

when the barrel was cleaned
out
