This poitrait of Monta Markham, Ortgon Shakespearean
Festival actor in nil 1961 role of Hoiipur in "King Henry
IV, Part I," has brought honor to Dwaina Smith, official pho
tographer of the festival. The portrait, along with one of
Richard Risso as Hamlet and Christopher Newton at the
ghost of Hamlet's father, also from last year's festival, were
exhibited in the 71st annual Exposition of Professional Pho
iography which closed at the Conrad Hilton hotel in Chicago
August 10.

ceived a top honor among
professional photographers
by having two prints accept
ed for exhibit at the 71st an
nual Exposition of Profession
al Photography at the Con
rad Hilton hotel in Chicago.
In addition, a collection of
his Shakespearean prints will
go on display Monday, Au
gust 13. at Jackson County
Federal Savings and Loan as
sociation in Medford.
With the 71st exposition
also was held the 10th Na
tional Industrial Photogra
phic conference, the two
events being held simultane
ously from August 5 through
10. More than 5.000 profes
sional photographers from
the United States and foreign
countries participated.
The works which won hon
ors for Mr. Smith are en
titled, "Hotspur." and "Ghost
of Hamlets Father," both
taken of actors portraying the
Shakespearean parts. Screen

The exhibit in Medford
opening Monday at the loan
company at 2 East Main
street will continue through
August 20 and is open to the
public.
The collection of Shake
spearean prints are those used
in the annual souvenir pro
gram for the Ashland festi
val, as well as other photo
graphs of S h a k espearean
dress, characters and makeup.
This is Mr. Smith's fifth
year as the official festival
photographer and for the past
two years he has displayed his
collection at the Greenwich
Village Art show in Ashland,
being held this week end and
open today from 10 a.m. to
6 p.m. in Lithia park.
MANOR-ISMS . . . .

Dr. Kirkland West, a vice
president on the Manor Board
of Trustees, insists that the
Manor is his "pride and joy,"
so he brought a bus load of
34 people to see it last week.
These people were on a tour
of National Mission churches
and Westminster Presbyte
rian church in, Medford is
one of them. They came from
18 different states even as
far away as New York state.
Dr. Dwight Russell, Port
land, was conductor for the
tour through Oregon. As
usual, when I met Dr. Russcl,
he was frantically hunting
one loitering sheep of his
flock, while the other 33
waited in the bus more or
less patiently. Each member
of the tour was given a bro
chure of the Manor and other
Rogue Valley information to
take back to his home.

Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Tuttle,
Manor members from Med
ford, have as houseguests
their daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Rayburn
from Altadena. Calif. Mrs.
Miss Slater
Returns
From Europe
Miss Carol Slater, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Slater,
3405 Jacksonville highway,
has returned from a tour of
Europe sponsored by Whit
worth college, where she will
be a junior student this fall.
The student arrived August
4 in Sopkane, Wash., where
the college is located, and was
met there by her parents and
sister. Miss Shirley Slater.
The tour had left Spokane on
June 19.
After visiting relatives in
Spokane the Slaters departed
for Seattle to attend the
World's Fair and also were
guests of other relatives thrre.
They returned to Medford
by way of the Oregon coast
and at Garibaldi they spent
some time with Mrs. Elsie
Porter, mother of Mrs. Slater.
They arrived home August 10.
On the European tour, Miss
Slater was with a group made
up of 21 other persons of mix
ed ages and occupations; some
were students, others were
teachers, one was a designer,
several were secretaries and
others of varied occupations.
As a result of the trip, the
students will receive six
hours college credit in socml
studies.
The travelers visited 11
countries, Including Portugal,
Switzerland. Austria, Ger
many. Denmark. Sweden.
Norway. Holland, France and
England.
The educational tour took
them to numerous art muse
ums and cathedrals and in
Stratlord - on Avon they at
tended a performance of
"Macbeth." In each city the
group visited shops and ming
led with the people.
Miss Slater particularly re
marked on the friendliness
and hospitality of the people
and the good quality of cloth
ing and materials found in
the shops.
She also observed that
everywhere persons appeared
well dressed and well groom

Mr. and Mrs. John Jacobs,

Rayburn (nee Nina Tuttle)
visited the Manor last year
also, so a number of Manor
members and many of Mrs.
Rayburn's old-time Medford
friends have been entertain
ing for them and keeping
their social schedule crowded
both daytime and evenings.

CORRECTION: Some time
ago I reported a rumor that
the large, white, concrete
water-tower on the brow of
the hill just south of the
Manor grounds MIGHT be
painted. It won't be! What a
disappointment! The latest
idea seems to be a project to
plant ivy all around the base.
When and if it is planted,
and if it grows, and if it isn't
nipped back by winter
frosts, and if the tender ten
drils manage to cling to that
particular form of concrete
then we should live so long as
to see the tower covered.
So-o-o, evidently, Manor
members and our friends in
the valley must continue to
see the tower as is for some
time to come. Naturally, it is
the beautiful landscaping and
our private gardens near the
tower that make it particu
larly conspicuous.

Dr. Flora Ross, Illinois,
had Mr. and Mrs. John Hoad
ley and two grandchildren as
houseguests in the Manor.

granddaughters as house

sometime in Medford. The
girls are really excited about
luncheon parties in the Manor
with their Medford friends
joining them and swimming
afterward in pools of their
friends.

In fact, this Manor Is prac
tically swamped with guests
both houseguests and those
coming in for meals. Reserva- j
tions for tables and the club
room for parties must be
made far ahead. A number of
us are trying to buy Shake
spearean Festival tickets from
each other for our guests.
Many, many members en
joyed the "Feast of Will" on
the opening night, and many
are planning to see all the
four plays.

husband are teachers in the
San Francisco public schools.
They came to Medford from
Yreka, Calif., where they
have been spending the sum
mer and will return there
after their visit here.
They also have been guests
of his brother-in-law and
sister, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Clark, 827 Park street; and
another brother-in-law and
sister, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Dugan, Valley View, near
Ashland.
Mrs. Howarth is to leave
for her home today, accompa
nied by Caroline Clark,
daughter of the Josepn
Clarks, who expects to re
main there for about a week.
