Annual Cancer Lectures
Scheduled for This Week
The third annual John Tom
lin Memorial Cancer lectures
have been scheduled for Aug.
15 and 16 at the MoRue Valley
Country club, according to
Dr. Brian Stringer, Medford,
chairman.
Established by a bequest to
the Oregon division ol the
American Cancer society by
the late John R. Tomlln, Med
ford businessman, the lectures
bring to the attention of the
medical profession of this
area the latest information
about diagnosis and treatment
in the cancer field.
Guest Speaker
Featured speaker for this
year's two-day meeting on
cancer of the breast will be
Iledley J. B. Atkins, director
of surgery at Guy's hospital,
London, England, who be
came director of the breast
clinic there in 11)37.
Participating on the Aug. lfl
panel with Dr.. Atkins will
be C. V. Allen, radiologist
J. T. Crane, pathologist, Port
land; L. H. Garland, radio-
ologist, San Francisco, Calif.,
and Oscar Heycrman, intern
ist, Medford. Harvey W. Ba
ker, sugeon, Portland, will be
moderator and discussion and
quest long from the medical
audience will be encouraged.
Dr. Atkins will discuss
Charles Darwin at a joint
noon meeting of the Medford
Rotary and Kiwanis clubs at
the Rogue Valley Country
club Aug. 14, as well as at
the Aug. 15 dinner meeting,
which is open to anyone Inter
ested. Reservations may be
made by contacting Mrs. Mahr
Reymers at the American

Zoning Ordinance Expected To Be Acted
On Wednesday; Petition Reported Valid

sons attended the American
Sunbathing association's an
nual convention ending today
at White Oak lodge, about
four miles west of here.
Those participating repre
sented all 50 states, as well as
Denmark, Sweden, France,
Mexico and Canada. The at
tendance included about 400
actual delegates plus their
families and guests.
Highlight of the convention
was "Barely Proper," a play
written about 30 years ago by
Tom Cushing. Presenting the
drama here was a non-professional
group from Holly
wood, Calif., The Pacificans.
The play had been per
formed only three times pre
viously. Produced and direct
ed by Donald Johnson, New
York newspaperman and au
thor, the play spoofs a Ger
man family who practiced
nudism. The plot was set in
the suburbs of old Berlin
about 1003.

day. According to law, the
court must consider the ordi
nance prior to Aug. 28, the
date the present interim
zoning ordinance in the area
expires.
Last Wednesday night, the
county planning commission
approved the final changes
in the ordinance during their
monthly meeting and re
quested that the referral let
ter to the court recommend
that the court call an elec
tion in the zoned. area.
Legal Requirements
It was pointed out at that
time that due to the legal re
quirements prior to holding
such an election, several
months would elapse before
it could be held after the
court receives the ordinance.
County Judge Earl Miller
said Friday that if the ordi
nance is "reasonable" he saw
no reason why the court
couldn't adopt it Wednesday.
He said an election on the
ordinance would then be
held as soon as possible for
the people of the area to de
cide themselves if they want
the prescribed zoning.
"The county court has no
intention of forcing zoning
on these people under any
conditions," the Judge em
phasized. Eaton also reported to the
court that a petition submit
ted recently to the court
from residents in the South
west Phoenix area had been
verified after "exhaustive
study and research."
Signatures Validated
There were 105 signatures
of residents in Precinct 61
on the petition, Eaton said.
Seven of the residents sign
ing the petition don't live in
the affected area, leaving 98
valid signatures on the peti
tion. Eaton told the court that
there were 361 eligible voters
in the zoned area. According to
law, 15 per cent of these (54)
are needed to successfully
petition the court The total
number of verified names
represented about 27 per
cent, well in excess of the re
quirement, he noted.
It was pointed out that
there had been some con
fusion concerning the pe
tition on the part of many
of those signing.
Two Phoenix residents ex
plained to the county court
Friday that they thought the
petition was merely "a regis
try" of those attending the
July 18 public hearing for
use by the planning commis
sion. Petition Valid
Miller assured the resi
dents that "no particular
harm" had been done in sign
ing the petition. He said Dis
trict Attorney Alan B.
Holmes had said earlier that

The county court already
has authority to do what the
petition asks, the judge said.
The petition "doesn't even
mention an election," he con
tinued, although that's what
the petitioners have been
seeking.
Miller said the court had
no intention of zoning the
area in question without an
election and assured the peo
ple of their right to decide
the matter themselves.
Miller said the next "mat
ter of statutory procedure"
for the court is to either
adopt or reject the zoning or
dinance Wednesday.
