Local Boy Tells About Food, Overnight Camping in Norway

youth is living with Mr.
and Mrs. Anstein Dobloug
at Stor Degum, near Nydal.

High school this Sep
tember.

Stor Deglum is rather a
large farm for Norway. They
raise potatoes and grain. I
gather, however, that the
largest source of income
comes from the mink and fox
farm. There are four men
hired to work at the mink
farm, and four or five others
to work on the farm" part
of the farm. Wheel tractors
are used for doing the work.
The house is large. It has
at least 20 rooms, and is two-
story. It is nicely furnished
with items we would con
sider antiques, but which are
not so old for Norway. They
include old guns, clocks, tea
pots and water holders. The
grandmother lives in a house
that is 150 years old behind
the main house. My room is

small, but nice and com
fortable. Food is really fabulous. I
have liked everything so far.
My favorites are wiencr
schnitzcl, salmon, and whale.
We have had ox, herrinR, and
mackerel. I liked the macke
rel least of all. A few days
ago at the hut we had a spe
cies of cod that was "out of
this world."
On the Fourth of July,
Jon, Ara Britt, Erik and I
went over to one of Asa's
friends to celebrate. Another
exchanse student and her
sister were there too. We had
hamburgers, and were they
Rood! The idea of the party
was to have typically Ameri
can things.
After supper we sang
American folk songs. A lady
from California who was vis
iting there played the guitar.
After singing we went out
and exploded some fireworks
that Gretta (our hostess) had
bought. They were great! We
had one huge sky-rocket, the
biggest that I have ever seen.
When we returned to the
house we discovered that the
whole neighborhood had been
watching all the activity at a
safe distance. It was quite an
evening.
Femily Dinner
On the nexl evening we
had a big family dinner. It
was quite in contrast to our
family dinners. It was just
like eating at a fancy down
town restaurant in New York.
Mor (mother) hired t w o
cooks to help her with the
meal. Jon, Erik and Andrias,
one of the fellows who works
on the farm in the summer,
served. They were very effi
cient (the towel over the arm
bit and everything).
We had two main rniircne
the first of salmon, and the
second of wienersnitzel. At
both servings we had potatoes i
ana carrots ana some other i
delicious "junk." The Nor- i
wcians can really put the I
food away, and I am having
a wonderful time adapting! i
1 am getting along fine I
with the language. I speak al- j
most all Norwecian at 1hi
dinner table. All of my fami-1
ly speaks English, so we get
along fine.
Big news this week was our i
trip to the mountain cabin at
Oyungen, about an hour
drive from Stor Deglum.
"Our" cabin is real nice with
running water and sinks, but
no electricty. There is a wood
stove and a sort of two-burner
hotplate. The one impres
sive thing about the cabin is
the fireplace. It Is really dif
ferent and kind of modern
ish. Camping Trip
Jon and I had a very suc
cessful and fun adventure
while at the eabin. We fixed
a breakfast of bread, jam,
vegetable soup, milk and co
coa. Then we got ready to
leave on an overnight camp
ing trip to Lake Moklebv-
sgoen, which is located in a
wilderness area some distance
from Oyungen. We had one
pack in which we put a sweat
shirt, one small saucepan, no I
utensils, two raincoats, two
sleeping bags and one after- !
noon and evening's food pro
visions. ;
The terrain and scenery in
this area were quite interest
ing. The land was rocky with
rolling hills which were com- j
plctely treeless and covered
with a Norwegian brand of
sagebrush. Unlike true des
ert land, the area has a great '
deal of grass and many
marshes In the valleys be
tween the hills.
We hiked about HVj miles,
and it took us three hours and j
55 minutes. The lake is large, 1
clean and extremely cold. For !
excitement wc decided to j
take a swim, and believe me,
it was exciting! The water
was so cold that I could
stand it for onlv a mimitn nnrt
j then I had to kick like mad
to keep my blood circulat
ing. It was the most refresh
ing swim I have ever taken,
to say the least.
Honey Sandwiches
We then ate our lunch.
which was honey sandwiches,
j After lunch we lay In the sun
for awhile and then decided
to hike to the top of a near
by mountain where wc erect
ed a monument at the sum
i mil. Then we went back to
camp and fixed dinner. Din
ner consisted of nine wieners
i each, two pieces of bread, and
honey. That is what I call a
real balanced meal! The best
part of the meal, was the fact
that since we brought no uten-
siis or aisncs, we nan none
to wash.
When we were about half
way back to the cabin we
sighted what we thought were
reindeer about a mile away
on a ridge. It is quite a treat
to have a chance to see wild
reindeer. They are very tim
id and we had to stalk them
carefully. They are much
smaller than I had expected,
their backs being barely waist
high, and arc colored gray.
We were lucky to get to see
them because, while there arc
many domestic reindeer rais
ed by the Laps, there are
relatively few of Ihe wild-
type
