Tournament Opens
Junior Singles
Field for tlic women's
singles competition in the
Medford City Tennis cham
pionships is "growing by
leaps and bounds."
So reported Robert Hull",
tournament chairman.
The tourney, a community
wide event is set for Satur
day and Sunday.
Women's singles, as of this
morning had the biggest
entry, 17 players. Competition
also is slated in men's and
junior men's singles and men's
and mixed doubles.
Entry deadline is today.
Prospective participants were
advised to contact Huff, Tod
Tibbutt, Phil Holman and Bud
Wimberlcy or the city recrea
tion office. Medford park and
recreation department is spon
sor. This is the second annual
tournament. The doubles
events are new only singles
were contested last year. De
fending singles champions are
Tibbutt in men's and Sandy
Shugart in women's, iiolman
was runnerup last year to Tib
butt. Among the men's con
tenders is John McKinley,
Southern Oregon college and
cx-Mcdford liigh.
Opening round of junior
men's singles wil start the
tourney at 7 a.m. Saturday.
First matches of women's
singles will come next.
Players are instructed to re
port to the Medford Senior
High school courts on Satur
day morning to be scheduled.
Fees are payable at the time
of a players first match.
Matches will be two out of
three sets.

The left-hooking Fernandez
will meet Phil Moyer of Eu
gene in a 10-round middle
weight bout at the Bethel
baseball park here. A crowd
of more than 8,000 is expect
ed. The muscular Cuban, who
now lives at Miami Beach,
Fla., has suffered two techni
cal knockouts in his two starts
this year since dropping a
split decision to Gene Fullmer
in an attempt to gain part of
the title in his last fight last
year.
Fernandez was beaten by
Dick Tiger on a sixth-round
TKO in January and lost to
Joey Giambra on an eighth
round TKO in April. The
losses have dropped him to
seventh among the contenders
in his class in the National
Boxing Association rankings.
But he is a favorite against
Moyer on the basis of a fifth
round TKO win over the Ore
gon battler in 19B0.
Moyer, the older brother of
high - ranking middleweight
contender Denny, has won
four of his five fights since
coming out of a year's retire
ment last April. He defeated
Sugar Ray Robinson in his
last scrap last month.
Fernandez has a 30-5 record
and Moyer has a 27-61 mark.
